Deer Harvest Photo Tips

The Administrators and Moderators at iowawhitetial.com understand that our members are proud of their deer harvest as they should be. We want our members to share their photos with all of us on this site. As you know iowawhitetail.com tries to assist our members to become more successful in all aspects of deer hunting. We believe that a quality harvest photo is one step in the hunting process. The whitetail deer is a magnificent animal and we as hunters have a great deal of respect for the species. Attention to details when photographing your trophy will preserve the memories of your hunt for the future.

1. Clean up your deer before you take your photo. This can easily be done with water, wash away as much of the bloody areas as possible.

2. Wash your hands before posing in your photo and wear clothing that isn't blood stained.

3. If possible take your photos in the field or in natural setting.

4. Position the animal in front of you, place your deer on its abdomen with the front legs folded back under the chest. Pull the rear legs up under the belly of the deer for a natural look. Harvest photos are easiest to take before your deer gets to stiff.

5. Try to position the camera at the level of the deer's head or lower. You can use a mini tripod, or have a friend take the photo for you.

6. Hold your trophy by the hide on the scruff of the neck, and avoid putting your hands on the antlers.

7. If you field dress your deer prior to your photo being taken avoid open body cavities and move your deer away from the field dressing area.

8. Try not to take the photo with the tongue hanging out of your deer. This can easily be accomplished by placing a small rubber band around mouth.

9. Relax and Smile!

We hope that the above tips will assist you the next time you take your harvest photo. If you are having trouble posting your photo, or want some help editing it, please contact one of the administrators or moderators.
Good luck deer hunting, and please keep those photos coming.

Having been in the business end of this for a while there are quite a few things like this that really help your photos. SOme of them are a little weird.. here's one: The best way to clean blood from the side of the deer or around the mouth is with Windex. Carry a spray bottle and a roll of paper towels with you and you will be amazed how well they clean up with Windex.

Definately windex awesome. It just seems to disolve the blood.

Another cheap trick is to get a set of taxidermy eyes and place them in the animal to avoid the mirror effect in the eyes.

Take a look at the picture of the 240 from CR in the PMA and have a look at his eyes... Attention to detail...

Limb, I've heard about doing that a before, but I have what is probably a dumb question. How do you get the taxidermy eyes to stay in? Do the real ones have to be 'removed' ?

I've used the taxi. eyes for years.Pop them in like a contact. There is a front and back to the eyes.
I keep a small pack in the truck with paper towels, windex,a brush, bottle of water.

Sounds like a lot of work but worth the effort.
