Planning to hunt Iowa this year?

Each year Iowa attracts new hunters from across the US that are seeking a trophy Iowa whitetail. If you are from out of state and planning to apply for a tag - post any questions you might have here - we would be happy to help.

Remember the June 8th Application deadline is quickly approaching. Good Luck!

Hey Chris,

How about setting up an Iowa Whitetail fund for the $320 I just ponied up for a nonres tag !

Just kidding. I think Limb Chicken more than covers that with all those SD turkeys he whacks!

My real question is will the preference point I received last year follow my zone choice? I was going to hunt my buddy's land in Monona county (Zone 3) last year but didn't get a tag. I have since decided to hunt on my brothers land a little farther north in Zone 1. Will the preference point I have be valid for a different zone?

thanks,
Tomo

Tomo,

Iowawhitetail savings and loan - nice ring to it!

Blind Sow just answered this question for us on another post. Basically your points follow you not the original zone applied for. You should have excellent odds in drawing your tag this year.

Going to try again with 1 point under my belt. If given a choice what would you recommend as a good date? I have to choose a week between Nov. 2 thru Nov. 22 for zone 4

I personally would choose the earliest week in November - 2nd through the 8th. I've always have my best luck between October 25 - Nov 10. Some would point out that the real hoggs are more susceptible during late November.

What does everyone else think.

I've always used the 15th as a point of reference and hunted the week leading up to that day. Two seasons ago it seemed like we were late. The 15th was on a Thurs. and that Sat. evening prior when we we arrived if there was a doe in a field there was a buck with her. Things just tapered downward from there. Then again the weather has only cooperated once in 3 trips for us.

One Cam, I agree with your dates for the best action. Plenty of big boys are vulnerable during this time, along with the hottest chasing action of the rut. I also firmly beleive the biggest of the biggest are most vulnerable during late Nov. My biggest have been taken the week leading to Thanksgiving.

My favorite time is around the 5-15 of november. it all depends where i hunt, one farm i hunt, the first week of november is always really reall hot, then the other place at the time is kind of dead until the next week, then it seems to get really hot and the other place is slowing dead. i agree on oct 25 - nov 15 always a great time. something magical always seems to appear on halloween night!!! it seems that during the week of thanksgiving i dont see as many bucks but what i do see is usually a huge one searching for does. good luck!!

Glad I checked in here a few days ago, I was thinking the dead line was the 18th for some reason.Spent almost 2 hours on hold guess allot of people waited till the end.Got 1 point hope to drawn in zone 6....Joe

This will be my first year trying to bowhunt Iowa in zone 5, I don't know what chance I have but I hope I draw the first year!

Griff, Welcome and good luck drawing. Be sure to let us know the outcome. Are you planning on hunting public ground in this zone?

Good Huntin,

Thanks....been waiting for this one. Had to sit it out last year. I always enjoy my trip up. The weather, the people and WOW! the deer. If I knew then what I know now I'd probably be a big Hawkeye fan instead of a GATOR fan. The all around experience up there is always top notch!
