Cedars are one of the few things that seem to thrive on neglect. At least that's what the ones I plant get treated with. I plant a bunch of them & let nature sort it out.
I'm in a high deer density area and they are the only trees the deer don't damage. I think your good to go just planting them if you have other trees around for deer to rub/thrash.
I planted over 1100 cedars on my place several years back. Had very very few with deer damage. One of the few planting that you really don't need to protect.
