Alright heres the deal. i was hunting on tuesday and i found a great horned owl under the power lines I was hunting near. It has a broken wing. I am kind over paranoid because I don't want to get into any trouble. I have it out in a dog kennel in my back yard. I know there is something like a Raptor center or something that deaaals with that stuff. I just dont know where somthing like that is. Like i said im kind of worried because some people already know about it at my school. any help would be greatly appreatioated. (by the way ive already talked to my vet and she said she could do nothing to help me) THANKS!!

there's a raptor center near iowa city/coralville area. don't know the phone number though. call your local game warden/conservation officer, they should know who to contact. good luck, i love those old hoot owls!!

who who who who, who who who whoooooooohaawwwww!!

I think you need to contact your local DNR rep. I know those Owls are very protected under law. Most would be understanding in this situation. Good Luck, find it hard to believe a vet would not point you in the right direction.

If you are still looking for a raptor rehab center, call the ISU college of veterinary medicine. Be careful when handling these critters. I bout had a small barred owl get ahold of me, ripped the heck out of my shirt.

oddly enough i just read in the iowa conservationist where a man picked up a injured peregrine falcon and he contacted his local conservation officer. the CO picked it up and then took it to some raptor center in minnesota i think. was healed and released. once again, good luck. maybe Blind Sow can help us out here.

yeah he is pretty awesome and he shredded my shirt. im kind of afraid to go to the local dnr because hes been know to turn around a few stories around.
A friend of mine also read he conservationist magazine. i might call that number. I do knwo that having feathers from these birds is illegal. SO WHAT ABOUT THE WHOLE BIRD????

The raptor center is at the Mcbride Nature center by Lake Mcbride. But I wouldn't touch it until I called the DNR to see what they said.

gundog870....... I had a very similar situation happen to me about two years ago here in Polk county. Found a great horned while out pheasant hunting and went through the trouble of catching it and wrapping my coat around it to blind and calm the bird and then walked 1/2 mile back to the truck. Called the local conservation officer and he came over and took a look at the owl and told me they were pretty common and that they didn't want to deal with it. Basically told me to take it out back and do away with it.

My good friends mother happened to stop by and would have nothing to do with that. So she did drive the bird to Ames (ISU) to have the wing examined and left the bird with them. Never did hear if the owl made it or not. All you can do is try. Good Luck..........

gundog,

i would say thats a no. Take it to a raptor center to help heal the bird and let it be free again, you owe it to the bird to give it a second chance at its normal life. you've helped it out a lot already by taking it in, but help it more by getting it help.

I know it will be hard to let go of it but its something you have to do. A buddy of mine raised some ducklings that had been abandoned and he let them go and every year they come back to his house and swim in his pool here in urbandale. All im saying is that it grew up in the wild so do everything you can to release it back to its normal life.

Good luck with him, give us updates,

GunDog I would find the center to help too. I wouldn't keep it, then the DNR would most likely get disturbed when it was well. Would be neat to see it fly again!!

...the sooner you contact someone (IDNR or a Raptor Center) the better...if you are in the west central part if Iowa I can give you the number of a really good Raptor Care Center...time is of the essence if it has a broken bone - being hollow they cannot be reset once they begin to heal over...
