Here is a 2006 Late Season Muzzleloader success story from the PMA Conference.

I must say that this muzzleloader season may well have been the toughest one that I have ever hunted. Here in Southwest Iowa we had warm weather and no snow during the entire season.

The deer simply weren’t out and moving around during the legal shooting hours.

Most of the mature deer had been well educated during the early November anterless season and the two shotgun seasons. But, if one hunts the Late ML Season one is expecting to hunt educated deer.

The deer had no reason to venture out, food was plentiful and access to the food sources without snow was easy for them. The corn fields that didn’t have cattle in them had a lot of grain on the ground, and the deer were utilizing these fields during the cover of darkness.

I hunted almost every day this year during the ML season, only missing three days. I spent many days hunting with PMA members Deepwoods and my two sons Songdog and Avidhunter. We had a good time together. We would scatter out hunting different properties during the predawn, afternoon, and evening hours to locate the mature deer. We also spent many days hunting all day in heavy cover areas. We simply weren’t seeing the mature bucks that we had observed on the properties earlier during bow season. I was becoming discouraged.

I found the buck that I wanted on January 9th, 2006. I set up for a late afternoon and evening hunt on a corn field that we had hunted several times prior with mixed results on deer sightings. I had some does and fawns on the field early and they were feeding within 70-80 yards of me. I had to wait until the waning minutes of legal shooting time before this buck came out of the timber onto the corn field to join the other deer.
