Poachers

Well I had my first real experience with poachers the other night. Granted I have seen the poached deer in the ditches and over heard people talking about it but tonight was the first night I actually saw and heard it happening. I was sitting on the edge of a secluded corn field surrounded by timber and it has the south river run on the west side of it. Well I was on the ground on in the corner of the field and I kept looking across the river because there was a major deer trail crossing onto the property I was hunting. Around 3:30 I heard a ATV flying up and down the timber on the opposite side of the river, soon after I heard a couple shots. I just figured that someone was out hunting small game or getting that last min. bird hunt in. NOPE.... As soon as I heard the shots I saw 6 does run across the timber. As soon as they were out of sight I heard another series of shots come from the direction they ran to. I thought maybe it just coincidence that the deer ran that way and then the shots went off. About 5 mins. later I heard about 10 shots and saw 4 does running across the timber the same way the others had ran, the only thing about this group was one of the does was stumbling and falling down. Well the 4 ran in to a briar patch and only 3 came running back out. Just like before when the other 3 got about 75-100 yrds down the river there were a series of shots going off. I could hear the guys hooping and hollering. I decided to leave early and call the DNR, when I got up to leave I heard 2 LOUD shots. I mean a big rifle shot. Just about that time I heard the bullet hit a tree about 50 yrds behind me. I high tailed outta there and got to the truck and made the call to the DNR. He lives about 20 mins from where we were at and he made it in 8 mins. He went down in the dark and used his night vision goggles and couldn't see anything, however he told us that there had been complaints that there had been spotlighters and tresspassers on the chunk of land and they are now running surveillance. I pray that I'am there when they catch them SOB's.

lxshooter, I'm glad to hear you took the steps to get involved. Most people just look the other way, for fear of getting fingered as the guy who blew the whistle. Thumbs up to you!

Yup, way to go

Getting involved is the only way to stop these kind of people. As has been suggested by others before, carry your cell phone in the field (good saftey practice anyway), and program in your C.O.'s phone numbers as well as your local Sheriff's Office. That can save alot of time getting to a phone and fumbling for the right numbers. 5 minutes can mean the difference between caught and 8 miles away.

Timber pig,
I normally carry my cell phone with me, like you said it is a good safety practice. The bad thing was that I had carried it all day at work and the battery was on its last leg, so I figured that I would just let it charge up in the truck. Would'nt you know the night I need it the most I don't have it.

seems like it always works taht way- the night i shot my 11 pointer during bow season i forgot my phone so i had to leave my deer and go all the way back to my car and drive home and get help. and everyother night i had it with me -- whenever u need it, its never with u. Programing your local Co's number in their would save ALOT of time and just depends where their at, usually their somewhere near!! good luck on catching these punks!!

Way to go! The more legitimate hunters turn in law breakers the less of it we will see in the future. You are to be commended. You have set a great example for the rest of us.

turn in the poachers!!! I would be happy to turn someone like that in a second.get plate numbers, truck color or anything that might be helpful. there are less and less of them and more of us. stick together and don't be afraid to stick up for what is right. we have to break the mold of the older generations teaching the youger ones to poach.

I would like to thank you for turning people like that in. Poachers must be stopped. They only hurt legitamate hunters.

The only complaint I have is more states need to get on board to refuse rights to these criminals.
