I recently caught wind of a few kids that I know of poaching deer around the areas I've been hunting and seen big deer...they shot one eight point buck that the DNR are sure of but as looking in to 16 others around my area...they shot the eight point on land I frequent often with a .22 out of a truck...they threw it in the back of tht truck without a TAG, and stuck an arrow in it that stuck out about 6 inches or so...then to make things even better they drove into town parked at video store and someone saw the deer that was working there and called the local cops to come and take a look at it...they tried saying that they lost the tag, so the police said they would call the DNR and get a replacement tag, well when DNR got the call from the cops I guess he told the cops not to let them go anywhere because he's been chasing them for the past couple of days, suspected of poaching...he suspected right...I guess they're blaming them for a total of 17 deer all together shot and killed illegally in my area...I was figuring it and it's $4,000 for the deer alone, and that's not including the other fines they will get but I figured it out and it was $23,000 a piece for just deer fines alone..take about an expensive learning experience...

...too bad poaching isn't a felony, these guys will get a slap on the wrist, a fine, and be back poaching in 5 years. I like the African method of dealing with Ivory poachers...shoot to kill...no repeat offenders.

It would be a great help to our hard working conservation officers if everyone on this site put their local COs phone number on their cell phone and called anytime you come up with usefull information. That is a lot of additional eyes and ears. Notice that that is how the above case was made. Let's all chip in and help put poachers out of business and at the same time improve the image of hunters in the eyes of the non-hunting (and voting) public.

I H 2003, I think we know someone on common. I received the email yesterday with the 8 pointer that was "spine" shot and was still alive left in the field. We both know that area is home to some great Whitetails. Sounds to me like this would be a PRIME candidate to show everyone a lesson. Those type of hunters are NOT hunters and if they call them trophy's there parents are as much to blame as they are. This should have been lesson one when introduced to the outdoor world.

Here's sort of a good story. Monday night I was leaving my spot and a car was blocking the gate to the road. As I pulled up and got out it was the neighbor waiting to see who I was. He was helping keep an eye on stuff out there. There's been some spotlighting/poaching going on and he told me he's had one eye on the fields through the windows at home now. That's what it takes. More people to get involved. There's no way the CO's can get all these low lifes without some helpful eyes and ears...

they give all hunters a bad name, hope they hang em high, but at the same time, we need to be sure that the public doesnt view the minority as the way most of us hunt

Down here in VB County Iowa I know several Farmers/Hunters that are sitting in stands with video cameras, and they also are using treecams to catch the poachers in their areas. I suggested they pull a crocodile dundee trick on them, put a decoy out in the field with a gun strap on it. Then sho

ot at them from a safe distance.

Sounds like the same story I heard. Was it in the Grinnell area? Sounds like they shot some off one of my in-laws farms. Moosehunter nailed it on the head. We all have to keep our eyes open. I have also put the CO cell numbers on my cell phone. I have even started taking late night/morning drives around my neighborhood to check things out.

yeah, there has been a lot of poaching in the Mitchell county area. I know of a 16 point that was shot with a hi power, then they stuck an arrow in its back. My grandpa was sitting in a treestand about a hundred yards away. Its just saddening, because I have had my eye on a few of the bucks, and they keep chasing them everywhere....We keep calling the CO and he said there was nothing he could do about it..so needless to say, me and my grandpa were pretty upset

I think after the DNR get a tip from an area that a deer has been poached, they should set up a sting operation
I don't know if any of you remember this tv show that was on fox on suday mornings. It was called Game Warden. Well any ways they would set up sting operations with electronic deer. They would put them off the road a hundred yards or so and wait for people to pull up and shoot it. It was a cool show with most of it being out west though. But i think they could still nail poachers around here!
