I have been known to quaff a Dr. Pepper while on stand. 99% of the time I have the wind in my favor enough that I am not too worried about the deer picking up on any scent from the pop. I do make a decent effort to be scent free, but I mainly rely on hunting the wind correctly anyway.
Try to be as scent free as you reasonbly can without taking the fun out of your hunting. Don't sweat the small stuff, bring your can of pop with you. If your sitting with the wind in your favor it's not a big deal.
Get yourself some cream soda, deer like the smell of vanilla anyhow!
99 percent of the time a wear a 16oz. Mt. Dew on the side of my pack just like a six-shooter. It's always the plastic bottle with a screw on lid. I just can't seem to go without the caffine that early in the morning.
CRITR
I drink pop, gatorade, or water. Like somebody else said, don't sweat it.
O/T I quit drinking Mt. Dew in July and my stomach has never felt better. I had a taste the other day from my daughter's at dinner and almost got sick. It's like drinking battery acid now.
I always carry a plastic bottle of Gatorade in my back pack, when the drink is gone it makes a good treestand urinal! Just don't forget whats in it when you get home! You all may think I'm crazy, but I have been reading up on Chloraphyl and just started taking it. It is supposed to reduce the amount of scent your body gives off and reduce your breath odor. Tablets are the way to go. Tried the liquid and it tastes just like a fresh mowed lawn! Anything is worth a shot if it helps me get closer to the critters.
