The Hunt Never Ends....
My dad bought this dog for me when I was in 7th grade from a breeder in New Jersey. I named him Hammer.

Anyways, he's getting pretty old now (12yrs old) and doesn't get around as well as he used too. He has been limping around a lot lately and tends to sleep a lot more than he used too. Hammer has been a great dog but I realize that he doesn't have a lot longer left so i've been looking to buy a new pup.

Hammer is a Brittany, and they are high-strung to say the least, espescially when they are younger. They need plenty of room to run, and since I recently moved due to a job change I decided the next dog i'm goin to buy is going to be a lab. I just started waterfowl hunting the past few years as well which is another reason why I decided to go with a lab.

I'm not sure if i'm going to buy a female or a male, but i'm contemplating names right now.

To help me get a list of names, what is your dogs name? Post a picture of him/her with the breed and age if you would like.

Here is Hammer after a decent hunt back when we had upland game where I live!

Good post and beautiful dog! It sure makes me miss pheasant hunting!

I really want a bird dog out here, but I don't do enough quail hunting to justify it. I opted for family dogs instead, German shepherds in particular. I was raised with one that my grandpa had and NOBODY messed with me when he was around, so I followed suit knowing I was going to raise my family. Shortly after we bought our first house in Tucson, I bought the black-tan, Jake (80 lbs). She'll be 9 years old this November. She's had really bad hips since she was a puppy, but our ortho vet recommended against hip surgery because we kept her so active (up to 10 mile hikes, full pack of her own). We bought Thor (100+ lbs), the white GSD a year later as a companion for Jake and to be my wife's dog, since Jake was mine. Thor will be 8 this December. They've both slowed down quite a bit with their hips and the winters here in Flagstaff, after most of their lives in the desert of Tucson, but they still have a lot of spunk when the want it. I've seen their reactions to people posing a threat to my family (especially my kids), to people ringing our doorbell (and the reactions from said people), and when we used to cross paths with illegal immigrants and drug smugglers in the mountains of SE Arizona. Like you say, Sureshot, I know the time is coming to replace them and I dread it, but, without a doubt, my next ones will also be GSDs. I'll just fork over the extra money and get one from either (former) West Germany or the Czech Republic. And yes, for those of you who caught it, Jake is a female GSD. I had the name picked out before the dog (based on the old country song "Feed Jake") and I looked at her and it stuck. I knew some cool girls in college that went by Jake instead of Jackie or Jaqueline, so I figure my super smart dog could too.

This picture was taken in March 2009 and I love it because of how they are standing with my then 5-year old daughter.

That's one tought looking Brit, Chris. Nice and stalky like they are supposed to be... I had a German Shorthair named Page that I also got in 7th grade. She died this last spring but was one GREAT dog! I'll have to scan a pic.

This is Penny, my 6 year old German Shorthair. I lost my 14 year old Shorthair Buckshot a couple years ago. A lot of work raising a good GSP, but so worth it. The smartest and most loyal dogs there are if they are properly raised. Breaks my heart to see guys leave them in a kennel except for bird season. Awesome family dogs too.

This is my lab Kaycee, she just turned 3. She is trained for waterfowl trials but she kind of took a liking to shed hunting last winter. Makes me sad when you guys talk about your dogs being old or passing away, Ill be crushed when I lose her. She is my first dog and its hard to accept that they arent around for long. Great thread!

Chris:

My family recently adopted/rescued a 6 month old Black Lab from a shelter. As our first family pet, we are still adjusting to him as much as he is to us, but for the most part it is going pretty well.

This is Hunter.

Here is my French Britt, Brenda, she's 5 now and I have to give her up due to upcoming move. Breaks my heart already. She is in her prime, but I wanted to ensure she will stay in bird country. Hope to get her out a few more times before we leave.

Brett (left) and Stacie Lou (right). Brett is now 15 and Stacie passed away 2 months ago at the age of 13. Two of the better dogs I have ever hunted over.

This is my old boy Bodey. He is going on 9 and has to be the best dog I have ever owned. He is laid back as ever in our home but when it comes time to chase birds he is locked on.

This the wild man Harley. He is our 3 yr old Boston Terrier. Talk about a dog with personality and a heart as big as a lion.
