What would happen if I hooked up a 12 volt battery to a 9 volt system? Would it fry the electronics or do the electronics only draw the voltage they need?
I think I’ve figured out the polarity for the external jack on my D50. I’m thinking of just running a 12 volt motorcycle battery hooked to the external jack so it will work better in colder weather, last longer and be rechargeable.
Another idea I had, and haven’t backed away from it yet, was to use an old AC to DC adapter. I have kept them all over the years, when ever I’d buy a new cordless phone, or what ever; I’d keep the power supply. To show you how bad my math skills are I thought 6 “D” cell batteries were 6 volts. I found an old adapter with the correct polarity, plug size and 6 volt output. I plugged it in and the D50 took one picture and that was it. I scratched my head for several days till I figured out 6 “D” cells are 9 volts not 6. I do have an old adapter that has 9 volt output but the plug is the wrong size. I’m thinking of cutting the plug off the 6 volt and putting it on the 9 volt. And yes, I have the 500 feet or so of extension cord I’d need to run it. My original plan was to use a 6 volt tractor battery as mentioned above, until I figured out 6x1.5=9 not 6.
I suppose another way would be to use the 12 volt battery, an inverter to go from 12vdc to 120vac then use the 9 volt converter……
If I get this figured out I’ll post pics of how I did it, not necessarily how you should do it, but how I did it.
