Pros and cons of coyote calibers

Do you guys have a preference between the .223 or the 22-250? I am thinking of buying a barrel for the encore and can't decide on a barrel. What are the ranges and how do they compare. I don't care about the pelt, but I want something that'll lay em out at a pretty good distance! Thanks.

22-250 is more versatile and if you plan on reloads, you can juice the round up more. I bought a 204 ruger barrel for my encore just to be more pelt friendly and has similar and sometimes better ballistic numbers than the 22-250 out to longer ranges but lacks hard energy. More less your preference. The 223 is a good choice for cheap ammo and a good solid 300 yards or less round.

The 22-250 has a little better ballistics, shoots flatter and hits harder. The advantages of the .223 is that ammo (especially brass for reloads) is cheaper, its a little more friendly to your ears, and recoil is so mild you can often see bullet impact through your scope. Those advantages probably matter more for things like prairie dog hunting than yote hunting though. They are both pretty accurate rounds and both will shut down a yote pretty quick so its pretty much personal opinion.
In my experience whether your calling, spot and stalk, or tracking, shots over 250 yards are fairly rare. When calling the yotes usually either run me over or dont show up at all. Actually, I've killed alot more dogs with 12ga #4 buck than anything else and we dont even carry rifles anymore when we hunt as a group.

The greatest advantage to the .223 is being able to tote a black gun

Having a semi-auto with 30 rounds at your disposal really makes a difference on follow-up shots

After looking at all of the variables I went with .223 because 1: rounds are cheaper and 2: ARs don't come in 22-250.

Bottom line, you can't go wrong with either. It really came down to the difference in price of ammo for me.

My favorite fox/coyote gun is a .22-250. The .223 is a lot cheaper to shoot. You may want to consider a .243 if you only want to buy one barrel so you can use it for other big game animals. The .243 can also be loaded to perform as good as a .22-250 with a much heavier bullet which equals more knock down power. You can't go wrong with any of these calibers. That being said...of the three coyotes we shot this morning they all went down to a .223.
