Public land turkey & a snake

Loess Hills public land bird & a snake. I laid my bird down for some pics & his head landed on a snake. I thought it was dead but it was just really cold & didn't start moving until I picked it up. I've never seen this kind of snake. The pattern is not like a bull snake, & the snake is very flat - not tubular. It was about 12" long. Took a few pics & let it go. Any ID or info on the snake?
