Put the heat on one today indeed

Well this morning was an eventful one indeed. I took the day off work after looking at the weather last night and seeing that we would have a northerly wind even though it was NE it still would work great for a stand I have been seeing good buck out of. North winds have been rare this year thats for sure. I got in my stand around 6:00 got everything settled in and waited for the sun to come up and the deer to start moving. At around 6:35 I had enough light to see around very well in the surrounding woods so i hit the ol horns together, I let them eat hitting them so hard you could smell the hot anters. Not five minutes later i have a deer dang near on top of me. I could see it was the big wide 8 that i have been after. I have his shed from last year and wanted him bad. Well long story short he walked right in like he owned the place worked a scrape and looked around for who was battling. I grinned to my self and thought this deer is dead he just dont know it yet. He walks in broadside at 20 yards i draw back and settled the pin, or so I thought. I squeezed the realase and watched the lumenok fly, but oh just a litte high. The arrow hit the deer right on top of the back. I hit nothing but backstrap. I could have puked and cried at the same time. He ran about 60 yards stopped and turned around and blew and blew then stomped his foot. I could clearly see this was a non fatal hit, it was obvious and i was sick. After watching what should of been in the back of the truck just walk on his merry way for about 5 min. I just sat down and moped. I contemplated just climbing down and calling it a day. After a half an hour i figured i just as well nock another arrow just in case.
7:30 came and i hit the horns again and had a 135 class 8 point come running in. Then a little 6 point came in. Both came to the tree pretty much. I thought about redemption on the 135 but thought to myself why the heck would i do that. I have plenty of time left and I just need to get over it. So I sat back and just watched. within the next 15 minutes I had 3 other small buck come in to check things out.
8:30 came so I decided to hit the horns again so far its worked like a charm. I hit them hard this time while grunting aggresively and I look to the north and this big boy was running right at me. I quickly hung up the horns and pulled up my binos. He was 60 yards and closing fast I saw he was a definate shooter, lowered the binos and picked up the bow. Man am I glad I knocked another arrow. He came down the same trail as the big 8 but stopped to trash a fallen tree, ears were laid back and it looked like he was slobbering like mad. He came to the creek a mere 15 yards away then turned and followed it down to the exact same spot the big 8 did. This time however I was focused and not counting my chickens before the hatched. I settled the pin for sure this time and let the arrow fly. It drilled him and he took off to the corn. I watched him go out about a 100 yards the pile up. To say I was pumped was an understatement I just sat down for the second time today. I tried to call my buddy but my phone went dead wouldnt you know it. After a few minute i look up and another deer was coming in. He was about low 140 8 point. I watched him for 15 or 20 minutes then he worked off. I then started to gather my stuff only to look at the top of the hill to see the big wide 8 cruising along the corn, with a nice battle scar on his back seeminly unfased to say the least. It definetaly made me happy to see him not run out of the county, but he wanted no part of coming back down along the creek. I then climbed down and picked up on the massive blood trail and found this guy about 100 yards out in the standing corn. For those who have never dragged a deer through standing corn you dont know what you are missing. It was tough to say the least. I tagged him then went home to charge my phone to call for some help. Went back and with lots of effort got him to the rhino to haul him home. It turned out to be a great day for sure although even if I didnt get a shot it beat working on a Tuesday. For those who are still hunting it is just starting to get good so hang in there and enjoy the ride.

Looks like a HUGE body and a dandy set of antlers to go with it. Makes the couple 9'ers I passed look like dinks.

I put that thing on the scales tonight and he weighed 195 field dressed. He looked like a big bull plowing through the brush coming in. If something was in his way he just plowed through like a dozer.

Great buck. Thanks for the encouragement. I have yet to see anything worth shooting. However, just being in the woods is satisfying in and of itself. Congradulations once again.
