O.K. this year I said I was not going to take anything less than 160". Well I'm still hunting!! I have passed up many, many bucks this season only to come up empty handed.....as of yet. I have had 3 shots at three different bucks that would fit that catagory. The first, a nice 12pt with g1 and g3 broken off. The second was great 10pt. with the whole right side broken off. Then lastly a big 12pt, when I drew back a branch got between my string and you can imagine the sound it made when I released the arrow. Anyhow I am buckless so far and man am tired but I'll keep hunting. You know it kind of makes a guy feel good to hold out for a big boy,but it's hard ! I did shoot a fat tom, 29 lbs. 11 3/4 beard 1 1/4, 1 1/8 spurs.. Something had to die!!!

Sounds like you are having a good season even though you haven't filled your buck tag yet.

How many does have you harvested?

Sounds like something big is breaking off all those antlers, stick with it your doing the right thing. Nice tom to congrats.

Thanks guys. I have taken 4 does this year also.. Some of my friends have a bet going.....if you harvest anything under 145" then you have to mount it and buy 5 apple trees plus fencing for your farm. Maybe this will keep us honest.

QDMer,

I don't know about you but if I'm seeing quality bucks every now and then and enjoying being out there I'm having a great season. Shooting does sure helps also especially when you are in an area with too many does.

In four decades of bowhunting I've never filled all my buck tags and that is fine with me. They are a good excuse to keep going out there and continue to enjoy all that nature has to offer. During one stretch I went seven years without shooting a buck while passing numerous shots every year. I've got to admit that was kind of a long dry stretch.

QDMer ... Keep your focus on the does and bring a camera along to video the bucks that aren't quite wall hangers yet. Just think how cool it will be to have video of the huge bucks on your wall, before they were shooters.

FarmlandQDM brings up a great point. If you haven't tried it I bet you would be surprised how much fun it is to tape the bucks you pass and then show them to friends later on. I've been doing this for years and I'm at the point where I'd just about rather forget to carry my bow than to go out without my videocamera.

Then when someone asks if you got anything today you can say, "I had a great day! I shot three 8 pointers, two 10's and real monster. Want to see them?"

It makes every day an adventure and every hunt a success.

OldBuck,

That's a great outlook to have! While I know that many on this site share that view, I wish everyone going afield had at least some of that attitude. For the past several years, I've urged some guys I used to shotgun hunt with to take more does and let the small bucks walk and I think it's finally starting to soak in. I doubt they'll ever exhibit the patience/control to pass up deer like you and QDM'er, but every little bit helps.

You guys got me thinking! I have had a good year so far and I will take a video cam with me. I did that early this year but is a little heavy, I mount it on the front of my bow.Thank you for the kind words.

Wow, good job this season. Anyone seeing that number of bucks is doing the right thing. Curious about your bow camera mount... does it work pretty well besides the weight of the camera? How does the bow shoot with the camera on there? Picture must really shake when releasing. Anyway, good luck to you the rest of the season but it sounds like you have enough skill that you won't need any.

My camera bow mount works very well. My camera is older so it's kind of heavy. The real problem is my shoulder. It mounts right where your stabilizer would go. Anyway, it's really cool and when you shoot it does shake a little bit but not too bad. If I had a lighter camera it would be much easier for me.

Like OldBuck and FarmlandQDM, I carry a camera on every hunt.I'd probably forget my bow before my camera. It's a total blast to film all the bucks you pass. A couple of my wallhangers I've got on my wall I;ve got quite a bit of footage of from seasons before. It's also fun to sit around and watch with hunting buddies in the evening.Hang in there and let the smaller deer walk and it will pay off.
