Question for any vets or dog owners on this site

Nothing to do with deer, but I was hoping somone on here might have some advise for me. My 8 month old female lab has been throwing up once in a while (3 or 4 times in the past week and a half). Is this from the heat, eating too much, worms, running too much after eating? She has been acting normal and energetic but if this keeps up another day or two i will have to go to the vet for sure. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Question for any vets or dog owners on this si

It could be from any of the aformentioned problems. If it was a high strung/nervous Cocker, I would say that was completely normal but they seem to be the exception. What is the vacciantion history? Deworming history? Event preceeding vomition? Estrous cycle status? (where is she in her heat cycle) Type of diet fed? Are you feeding her too much at one setting? What sort of toys does she have and is any of them missing? I could ask questions all night long trying to runn down a differetial Dx list so fill me in on what I have asked so far and we can take it from there.

Doc on the site is also a vet so maybe he can chime in to offer some tips as well. Keep us posted

Re: Question for any vets or dog owners on this si

Every time she has vomited it has been after she's out of her kennel running for a while, but usually around an hour or more after eating. All her vaccinations are up to date, never had worms before but i give heartgard every month, hasn't gone into heat yet but i wasn't sure if this might have something to do with her starting??? I feed her at 6 in the morning and 6 at night, purina one large breed puppy (same food since she's been 3 months old and i go by the label instructions for amount by her weight). She has mostly just rubber chew toys and they're all there right now. sometimes i give her basted rawhides to chew on, they've never bothered her though. she vomited tonight before she ate and there was grass in it, but I haven't noticed that in her vomit before. The last few weeks she does have a thing for chewing the bark off a maple tree in our yard. Thanks again Shredder.

When she gets sick, does she have alot of retching or does she just seem to "cough" the food up? Is the food digested or does it look like she just ate it (still formed but just soft swollen pieces of food)?

Re: Question for any vets or dog owners on this si

have you seen them eating grass? when i let my dogs out of the kennel, after a few minutes they both start eating grass, and later they usually barf it back up

Re: Question for any vets or dog owners on this si

Gotta agree with Teeroy on this one. I have a lab that we joke is part cow. She eats more grass then any dog I've ever seen and then promptly pukes it back up. After all these years I don't worry about it anymore. She does have a tendancy to vomit when it's hot/humid after she eats if she eats too much or too quickly. Never have figured out if there is anything wrong with her but she's 10 years old and still going strong. Maggs

Lots of retching (dry heaves), food isn't very digetsted.

Re: Question for any vets or dog owners on this si

Boy Stalker, there's so many things that it could be. It is so hard to diagnose the cause of vomitting without a thorough exam and diagnostic tests. I would recommend you see your veterinarian. I always hate it when clients come to me and say "somebody on the internet told me that my dog has..."
Sorry I'm not much more help.

Thanks for the help guys, she's been fine the last 2 days, hopefully it was just grass or somthing she got into. Probably will take her to the vet if she does it again, but for now I'll cross my fingers. Thanks again

Re: Question for any vets or dog owners on this si

We have a five year old black lab. He has been a pig since i can remember. He is in good shape but he always eats as much as we give him and on occasion he pukes. He is one of the best hunters we've ever had and still has enough food to get fat if we dont run him and plenty of energy, so i wouldnt worry about it untill you see worms.

Re: Question for any vets or dog owners on this si

I'm no vet like Shredder or Doc so I have no professional opinion, just thought I'd mention that both my black and yellow labs eat grass and puke it up, almost on a daily basis and according to our vet, "they're extremely healthy", they get the proper diet and loads of exercise. Could be a grass eating thing.
