question/opinion

Hey guys, just curious...I had a friend throw something past me, and now I am curious.. I know what my thoughts are, but I want everyone elses opinion...

Ok, you shoot a buck (any deer), leave it over night, and the yotes get it... can you just turn the rack in to the dnr and keep your tag, do you have to tag it, or can you just leave it and keep hunting? Mind you, this rack would have meaning to it (first bow buck, or biggest)... just trying to keep this as general as I can...thanks for any inputs

Hmmm. interesting question. I would call the warden and ask him what to do but I would definitely use my tag or tear it up and call in a tagged deer. Same I guess if I found one a week later. Again, what I would do.

Warden may give you an antlerless tag for meat purposes but my any sex would be gone no matter what he says I guess.

If it's eaten up too bad, most CO would give you a salvage tag for it so you could keep your tag.

If you shot it then you would have to tag it.I dont think the dnr will give you a salvage tag for a deer that you shot, unless you didnt find it till after the season is over.I have shot a couple bucks that were no good to eat when i found them.I tagged them and took the whole deer out of the woods and disposed of the carcass.I was afraid that someone would see the ramains of a deer with its head removed and think someone was poaching.

The only way that i wouldnt tag a buck that i shot is if i found it after i filled my tag on a different deer. Then i would call the dnr and see what he says.

Will they? I don't think that's the best idea cause who's to say you weren't able to find it, but decided to let it lay just so you could keep the rack using a salvage tag AND continue hunting on your unused tag. It would take a pretty unethical type of person to do that, but those types of people are out there. I don't doubt that the DNR will give a salvage tag for a eaten deer, just think it could be used wrongly.

To answer the original question, if you shoot a deer and are able to find it, eaten or not, you killed your deer that your tag was for. I don't think you should be able to leave it lay or get another tag for it. JMO

:way:That is my opinion on it too, that no matter what, you shot it and found it, you have to tag it..I just wanted some others opinions... thanks and keep the opinions coming

Yes they will! I had this exact situation happen back in 2006. I shot a buck towards the end of the evening and wasn't sure on the shot. I let him lay until morning. When I came back, i found him. At least what was left of him. The coyotes had all but his head gone. I called my local CO and he met me at the property and I showed him the remains. He issued me a salvage tag so I didn't have to use my statewide. Maybe it helped that he knew me and knew it was 100% legit. I can see how someone might use this to their advantage.

I'd use my tag. I killed the animal, it wouldn't be fair to myself or that animal to continue to hunt. A hunter has the obligation to search for, find and claim what he/she has killed. You owe it to yourself and the animal. You can always get a different cape for a wall mount. If you need meat go and shoot a doe. Yes, I said it Shoot a Doe

Really shoot a doe for meat....don't get me started. :D We have to change the mentality to fix the problems....The first step is admitting there is a problem...LOL

If I shot it I am willing to put my tag on it even if was just the head. I wouldn't feel right doing it any other way. If was a doe would you call for a salvage tag? NO. If you feel you need the rack use your any sex tag. Jmo

I would tag it. It's not like I am buck hunting for the meat anyways.

I know a guy one time that shot a big buck early in the morning. Started looking for it late afternoon and never found it. He spent half the next day looking for it. He gave up sat back in another stand about 300 yards away and shot another big buck and then found his other buck while tracking the one he killed.

He had two over 160 down. He tagged the fresh one, called the DNR and they came out and gave him a salvage tag for the other. I know the guy didn't do it on purpose. It was just dumb luck he stumbled on his other buck when looking for the new one he shot.

X2 Cooter!! Here, you'd legally have to use the tag anyways.

I agree with this, but there are unique situations like what Liv explained that I think are specifically the reason behind Salvage tags. We have all lost deer, thats a part of bowhunting, but I would be willing to bet most, if not all of us don't call the DNR when we loose a deer. Its not required, but it would still be nice to claim that deer if you happen to stumble upon it later in the season. However, there are many hunters out there that would shoot a lesser deer and not tag it with the intention of picking it up as a skull or shed later in the season, Unfortunately there is a lot of dishonesty and antler greed out there.

If I was in a situation where I shot one but couldn't find it, then shot another one later and eventually found the first one, I would want both.... But, I also know that I wouldn't eat my tag if I shot and lost a buck, I would keep on after exhausting every effort to recover that animal. But again, there are those that abuse the system and steal from the state as often as they want... they are called poachers.

This is what I was giving my opinion on not the situation of days or weeks later. That would a different scenario. But yes I have lost the drive after loosing a deer and ate a tag knowing I didn't do my part making a clean quick kill. I guess I haven't put and hopefully won't put myself in that scenario.

I would tag the deer if I found it later on. If he was good enough to make me pull the trigger and use my tag on then, he will be good enough to put it on if I found him later on.

Promotes poaching. Promotes letting it lay so you can keep hunting. At least, that is what I heard from a local CO. I say, tag it and and go coyote hunting, or, call your CO and take his advice. He might give you the salvage tag.
