Well it was a very wet, windy, tough season. We did not seem to put in nearly as much time as we usually do chasing these critters this year but we were still quite successful in taking several very nice birds and had many other great encounters. Tee Roi did most of the work bringing in the birds to archery range and making them put on a show for the camera.
First Bird was shot by brother Matt on a cold wet afternoon. We set up in a small clearing in a oak timber at about 2 p.m. Called on and off for a couple hours. At 5 we heard one gobble. 15 minutes later this guy showed up and met Tee Roi for the first and last time.
Gotta love pictures of a wet bird...
Second bird was shot by myself on a new farm that has not been turkey hunting in a Long time. I was anxious to get set up. Not knowing where to go, Matt and I picked a small food plot on a ridge. It was windy but the birds worked perfect that morning and this fella left 9 or more hens to come and meet Tee Roi for the first and last time. I figured he would be a pretty nice bird because of no hunting pressure and I was even more surprised when I picked him up. One of my largest to date.
Third bird I took a friend and co-worker. We had to be to work by 7 and I had never hunted this farm before. I sat up in a small bean field. We heard nothing but I spotted a tom roosted and watched him fly down into our field. I called aggressively and 15 minutes later this fella came in with another tom, a jake, and two hens. My buddy shot with his bow and clipped the birds beard he flew up gobbled and started to run as he thought Tee Roi whipped up on him and so the 12 gauge ended the morning. This was my buddies first bird ever and a very nice one as well.
Final bird was shot by Matt again on a very short spot and stalk. Seen the bird and snuck as close as we could. Threw up Tee Roi within arms reach of me. 3 Yelps and the rest is about like the other stories. He saw Tee Roi and that put an end to our 2011 season.
It was a fun year and we had a lot of good times. Thanks to our decoy for doing most of the work for us. He looks like heck but the Turks love him!
