Generally brassicas need a good hard frost before the deer will get into them.
I think something about the freezing turns the starch in the plant into sugar and thats when they start into them. If the deer arent into them yet be happy your hunting season is a ways off. The longer the rape goes before they eat it the longer it will last into season.
Dont weedwhip/mow your rape. It wont regrow very well.
Side question... 1st year planting brassicas? Sometimes it takes a year or two before they "get a taste" for them and eat them. And yes, often it will be later (frost, etc) when they eat. Worst case is they don't eat them the 1st year you've ever tried them because they don't have a taste for them yet.
