awesome. my favorite way to hunt whitetails is already working. i lightly rattled and a small 6 point came to within 8 yards tonite!! he made a scrape and scent marked it and himself, it was awesome!! can't wait for another week or so and the big boys will be coming hard and heavy!!

Heard two bucks fighting it out this morning walking to my stand in the dark. Lots of antler clashing, leaves flying and branches snapping. Too bad I'd left my rattling antlers at home... Did get a nice little 3x5 to come in to 5 yards by grunting.

same here CentralIowa. i was sorta surprised when i turned around and there he was!! head up, ears forward, and lookin mighty curious!!

I tried it on thursday night with great results. Had a 120" sneak in and knew that something wasn't right and walked back into the timber. I rattled again and he came back about 10 minutes later. He took a drink from the pond, grunted back at me once, and then it was dark. Great experience overall

I've seen bucks sparring, but nothing major yet. My theory is that you don't want to educate them too early by rattling just yet. Does anyone disagree with me?

huntinrn - i don't think you educate 'em if you only do it sporadically. i will rattle in early season about once ever hour to hour and a half. during the rut i'll do it every 1/2 hour since bucks are on the prowl. of course i do know some places where the local landowners rattle the deer to death during late october and they won't come in at all during the rut.

That's what they do in Burlington. A person will set up their stand 50 yards from you and all you hear are the horns banging together and the can........nonstop!

My husband always does what the deer do, and that is what I learned. I have my own rattling antlers, which I made him paint black for me as I got busted once and I know it was because the deer snuck up on me and lo and behold....those old white sheds stood out like you wouldn't believe. But, this time of year, he tells me to just spar lightly like the deer. I've not used them yet this year as I'm doe hunting with my bow. Also, during the rut, I don't seem to have any success with them, but I think that's because the big bucks are with their does and I think it just makes them take their doe and head the other direction for fear that a buck might try to move in on them.

I'm still learning and every year I learn more. I've only been bowhunting for five years now. But, good luck to you and everyone and I'll continue to read posts and get advice from my husband and his friends and hopefully will have a better year this year as I've not filled my tag in the past few years.

i rattled in and passed up 2 small basket racked bucks tonite. grunting and light rattling is working like a charm!! as a matter of fact while i was listening to my doe hit the ground tonite i hit the horns and immediately one of those bucks came running up. the thrashing leaves must've sounded good to him combined with the horns!!
