When I purchased my Jake DSD the back was only painted. The next year they started applying flock to the back which made it more life like. I said I wanted that but didn't want to buy another decoy. I did some research and found I had all the supplies to do it myself. There are companies that sell flocking kit but they were rather expensive. Here are the materials needed. They all can be purchased at Walmart except the chopped flock.
1. A cheap foam brush.
2. A cheap kitchen strainer.
3. RUST-OLEUM flat black paint (this is the adhesive)
4. Black chopped felt ( I get mine from Van Dykes taxidermy supply 7$ plus shipping for a 1/4 lb)
Lets get started. DSD have a great outline for where it needs to be. Paint the back no need to go heavy just a nice even coat. Fill the strainer with the chopped flock and sprinkle it onto the paint. I go heavy so all the paint is covered. I put a trash bag under the decoy to capture the excess flock. Let it dry then tap on the decoy while holding it up side down and put the excess material back in the bag for future use. It takes about ten minutes to do it. I redo mine every two years. So give your decoy a make over and it just might help bag that wary tom. I've done this to the Dakota Jake also for a friend.
