In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy last week the Univesity of Iowa and 39 other universities with Biomedical Engineering Departments are in the midst of raising money for a memorial scholarship fund to be setup for one of our Colleagues and a tremendous man in our field. Kevin Granata was one of the faculty members who was taken tragically last week and as part of the fund rasing effort I am part of a team trying to collect donations from area businesses, etc. in order to hold a silent auction (all proceeds of which will go to the Granata fund).

I am curious as to peoples successes in the past in trying to get companies to donate items for such a cause and if there is anyone on here that has any experience with this type of fund raising. Thanks for any help that anyone may be able to send my way.

If I were you I would just go into the store and ask to see a manager, or a person who is in the office. Then tell them pretty much what you said here, that you are seeking donations for a fundraiser auction for a family who lost one of their memebers to the VT shooting. Anyone with a heart should probably come through for you. If they say thier business can't do such things, ask them personally if they have anything they can donate.

Good luck, and thanks for being so nice.

GOT MORE INFO

I have a person who has candles for fundraising. Cost to buyer is $8, retail $5, you make $3 every candle sold. If you want more info on this let me know.

Other Suggestions:
just simple tell the business what you are up too and also have names,if you can also have news clippings showing your person's name will help too,
go to you local stores, people are very willing to help out, specially with the VT, also go the local radio station, newspaper and run ads,
sometimes they will donate there space for the cause,
also they may have free ads too,
let the stores know you are not asking for a million dollars, anything to help raise money
ALSO: also get business cards, and put them on the donations,
gets the business a little adversting too

You would be amazed at the number of businesses that are willing to donate for a good cause. I have recieved tons of donations, and probably have 20-30 others that have said yes but just need to get in touch with their GMs before make a final decision. Thanks for eveyones input, I pretty much did exactly what was said, took some flyers into the local businesses and told them what we were all about. Pretty cool to see so many people willing to cooperate.
