Redid Pretty Boy=SUCCESS

Hardcorehunter

UL Shelter/Stove Geek
Decided to make him more realistic. I hunted last season with him and a couple of times this season with him, and I wasn't overly impressed with success. I then painted his head red to match the birds that I see in the wild and the very 1st time out; big tom sticks around and falls to my arrow. Coincidence, I don't think so, but time will tell. I had poor success with him white. Thought I would share.

Rainy this day so I had a fake fan in him
Pretty boy from the store; too much white IMO

Googled real bird for reference

2nd day out with pretty boy red. Bird came in and attacked pretty boy. Spurred him, knocked him off of his stake. That was enough, I had to defend my newly painted buddy, and I drilled him broadside as he stood over pretty boy right, where the wing attaches to his body. The bird dropped right where he stood and was dead before I could get out of my blind. 25#, 10" beard, 1" spurs. Gobbler Getter broadhead. Elite GT500

What kind of paint did you use? I was looking at doing something like that too.

I just used regular spray paint; valspar brand. I put 5 coats on him and my girlfriend taped off what I didn't want painted. Krylon makes a plastic paint that is designed for plastics if one would want to use a specialty paint.

I know some guys have good success with him stock white, but I just never did. I hear that a white head is breeding tom..who knows. I do know that almost every tom I see in the woods has quite a bit of red on him.

I agree, I painted mine red as well and have had much better success. The only difference between mine and Don's is I painted the snood white all the way down instead of red. Have had great results with mine, just suck at shooting lol.

What triggers a turkey to make his head turn red? Im am a extreme novice when it comes to turkeys.
This year I got with in 70yards of a few toms as they were feeding through an oak bottom. I gave one soft yelp and they went from white heads to BRIGHT RED and strutting. Problem was the strutted away from me:(
The red comes from being excited? Maybe? Would most strutting mean a red head?

Thanks guys!!! I believe it is a turkeys mood that changes his head color. I just know that almost every bird in the wild that I see, has a lot of red showing. I believe this red on his head will also show up at greater distances than the stock white did, and may aid in pulling one in from a distant flat or across an open field. Taking my girlfriend this weekend and hunting hard and hopefully be able to give another report on how well pretty boy works.
