Regeneration

DB Deer

Life Member
Three yrs ago I had a couple 4.5 acres fields in my timber that I ended up planting some trees in ( conifers &Swamp white oaks) and was giving it back to the deer as part of the sanctuary, previously it was in food plots and was hunted . For the last 3 yrs I have been letting those fields regenerate and it doesn’t seem to be doing much? Unless I’m just not patient enough? Also I’m going to put in a stand in each field for the mornings in the rut. I was thinking about cleaning up some strips and planting some kind of grasses ? Suggestions? Or maybe some food in parts ?.... "",.

Start here…. I think from your photo the green is cool season grasses? Right? That’s the #1 issue with converting cover over anything else & it’s super common to have that issue.
U can kill off every drop of those cool seasons in reality.
I’d be planting more trees and shrubs. Trees in tubes. So many options. I do love tree & shrub plantings …. Just more work than native grasses. Start with no cool seasons & on to the next options which are vast.

Best way I’ve found to remove the cool season grasses: in the next 2 weeks, when the cool season grasses are green, but the forbs haven’t started growing, spray gly on everything. That will release the seed bank.

Yes cool season grasses. I will kill it for now and see what happens. That was my first tree planting and I planted 220 Norway spruce and 175 swamp white oaks all balled and burlaped. Had a DRY summer and had a hard time keeping them watered as I don't live on site and ended up loosing 50-60% of them @ $80 ea With me not living there would I be better off with native grassess ? Since I plan on putting a stand in each field on to hunt during rut what about planting some beans in part of the north plot for the deer ? I have super high deer density

Sprayed with cleth crop oil and had a good kill (I thought )then worked the ground and the cool season grass is back with vengeance. My question is do I just keep after the same way and maybe not work the ground ? Or mixup a cocktail of gly ,24d. Cleth ?

Don’t work the ground. Heavy cleth & crop oil.
U do have options later on (early spring or late fall) like also utilizing some more tools like oust or plateau
