From the IDNR:
Successful Hunters Required to Report Harvest
Boone – Hunters who successfully bag a deer are reminded they must report their harvest through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ harvest reporting system. This is the second year for the deer and turkey harvest reporting requirement. If no animal is harvested, no report is necessary.
Harvest numbers by county will be updated hourly at http://www.iowadnr.gov, then click on hunting and wildlife then on NEW Deer and Turkey Harvest Reporting by County in the navigation column on the left side of the page. For a direct link, go to https://hfwa.centraltechnology.net/iowadnr/harvestdata/realTimeHarvest.do
All deer and turkeys must be reported by midnight on the day after taking the animal, before taking it to a locker or taxidermist, before processing it for consumption, or before transporting your animal out of state, whichever occurs first. Brief reporting instructions can be found in the upper right corner of the deer tag.
Deer and turkeys may be reported on the internet at http://www.iowadnr.gov, then click on the red Harvest Report button on the ride side of the webpage, or by telephone at 1-800-771-4692, or by visiting any business that sells hunting licenses.
Hunters should make every attempt to report online if at all possible. Online registration is the quickest and most reliable form of reporting, and the DNR would prefer more hunters use the online system. Currently, only about one in five deer are being reported online.
Hunters with multiple tags must attach the correct tag to their animal. Before tagging the deer, look closely at the tag to make sure it is the correct type (landowner/tenant vs. paid), for the correct sex (any-deer vs. antlerless), for the right area (county vs. statewide), and for the correct season.
Attach only the Transportation tag - the bottom portion - to the animal in the field. The Harvest Report tag - the upper portion - is attached only after the deer has been reported and a confirmation number has been written on the tag. When attaching the Harvest Report tag, be sure the registration number matches the Transportation tag.
When attaching the tags, fold the tag over the antler or leg and secure it by pressing the adhesive backing together: do not wrap the tag around the antler or leg. All information on the tag must remain readable after tagging.
The following tips should help if using the telephone system:
You may use a cell phone, but be sure you have a good, strong signal before making the call.
Call from a quiet location. The telephone system can mistake your voice with background noise.
Listen carefully to the response options. With the exception of the county name, the system is listening for a number rather than a word or phrase. For example, when the system says "For yes, press or say 1", you would respond by either saying "one" or by pressing the 1 button on your telephone keypad.
Speak as clearly as possible.
Listen carefully when your confirmation is provided at the end of the call. This number must be written on your Harvest Report tag. You have the option to hear the confirmation number again.
If you receive a "fast busy" signal, it means that there is congestion on your local telephone network. A "slow busy" signal indicates the system has reached capacity. So far, system capacity has never been exceeded.
If for some reason your call has been disconnected, you may try your call again. If subsequent calls indicate a deer or turkey has already been reported, you may either receive your confirmation number via the online reporting system or you may call the DNR at 515-281-5918.
