right or left handed

I posted a similar question in the past but can't seem to find it. I am left eye dominant but have always shot guns, write, drink, etc right handed. Thinking about taking up a bow, have heard that I should shoot left handed because of sighting, have also been told it doesn't make a difference because you close one eye to use a peep anyway so just go with what feels right. Anyone have the same problem or what is your opinion?

If you feel comfortable shooting either way I would strongly suggest shooting left handed if you are left eye dominate. Even if you have to force yourself to.

My son shot right handed for a while and was always hitting the deer target in the butt. I bought him a left handed bow after I figured out he was left eye dominate and forced him to shoot left handed. It made a world of difference.

Peep sight or not, try to shoot with both eyes open. I shoot a bow and a shotgun with both eyes open.

Been there done that. Go with the Left handed equipment. You'll be glad you did.

You knew I'd post Ghost.

I'm left eye dominate, shoot guns, bows and pool left handed. Everything else is right handed. Last year bow hunted with a right handed bow, just never felt right. Had to shoot with my left eye closed. Bought a left handed bow, best decision. The comfort is so much better and shooting with both eyes open is not a problem. Arrow groups are even better.

I have the same affliction. If you've never shot a bow before, go left handed. Or you can learn to compensate as I've done for 35 years. I am incredibly right handed and left eye dominant. I shoot both bows and guns right handed. Most of that time I shot a recurve instinctively and only recently began shooting a compound bow. I liken the compound bow to rifle hunting: You use both eyes to acquire the target, and close the left eye to aim and shoot. It's something you get used to.
I compare the instinctive shooting with the recurve to wingshooting. I took a trap and skeet lesson recently and learned more about shooting in 3 hours than in the prior 30 years. He tested eye dominance, then placed a piece of tape over my dominant eye--never shot better in my life. I had been closing my left eye and that just doesn't work with crossing shots. As for shooting the recurve I learned to compensate by anchoring somewhere under my chin, rather than directly in line with my right eye. I shoot with both eyes open that way. Someone pointed that out to me. I hadn't noticed--just pull back and shoot.

I shoot a bow right handed, gun left handed, write left handed, throw right handed, and kick left footed. No ryhme or reason to any of it, thats just how it all happened. I am left eye dominant also, but haven't had any problems shooting my bow. Logic would say for you to shoot left handed but I would say try it out both ways and see what works out the best.

Shoot a bow left handed, write right handed, golf left handed, bowl right handed, shoot a gun both right and left handed...left eye dominant.
Never had a problem with any of it !

Pharmer:

I too am left eye dominant and right handed everything else. Actually shot a bow right handed for 8 years and then one day just switched. Go find yourself a cheap left handed recurve with a 40 pound pull. Get real close to a bale of hay and just get the feel of pulling a bow and releasing. Forget aiming until you get comfortable. It won't take long. Once the muscles are conditioned you can keep shooting traditional or move over to a compound. email me if you need help.
