Never heard them called river chubs before but 'creek chubs' are probably one of the best catfish baits you can use in a small to middle sized river.. the 2 biggest channle cats I've caught were both on the cedar river and one was on a 6-8 inch live chub and the other one was on about a 5 inch dead chub... catfish will swim heavily up into tributary streams to gorge on these chubs.. can't beat a good natural bait that they are specifially targetting... you may get more bites on something smellier like some sonnies but you'll catch those bigger cats on a fresh chub or cut bait
thanks. When using a live one, where do you hook it at? Also how big of a hook? Planning on fishing one of the rock quarries tomorrow night with some friends from college.
Its a catfish... you can't use a hook too big. Like muddy said, under the dorsal or thru the eyes. If you go under the dorsal don't go too deep if you want it to stay alive.
