Roadkill

The amount of roadkill lately is stunning. I swear if there were two deer left in the state, motorists would run over three of them. ;):(

With fewer deer around (hunting and EHD), are drivers becoming complacent?

I was actually thinking the same thing a couple days ago. Probably not the case but it sure seems like I’ve seen a lot more than normal.

I think- maybe I am wrong- a lot of people with cabin fever are out in a lot of woodlots pushing deer around. One of my workers smacked a deer a few weeks ago, in the middle of nowhere- 5 miles from the nearest group of trees (literally wide open bean fields in this area) and he somehow managed to hit it. I think a lot of people have quit watching the road in favor of their phones.

Wife smoked one 2 weeks ago. In her defense it was in a spot I wouldn't have expected and came out of a deep ditch she had no chance. But around the same time I saw deer in the ditches like crazy. No idea if it's the green up, melted snow/excess salt, or what. But as many as I saw in the ditch, it's a wonder there wasn't more hit in that area

Just a FWIW...I never knew that there was a connection between road salt and deer being attracted to ditches. Huh! But I can see it as possible.

I agree the phones. And people drive way faster than before.

I got a new vw atlas last fall. It came with Sirius radio for a few months. Thank God it finally expired. I felt I was very distracted thumbing thru it especially on a dumb non-intuitive carpad.

I always had a theory about the salt as well. I live on a highway and next to my driveway there is usually a puddle of water in the ditch. The bottom of that puddle is always full of deer tracks. They dig in the mud when the water is gone. Gotta be going after salt from the road.
