I faced the exact same thing and even after my bad attempts at filtering the pond water I decided there had to be a better way. Get a couple 5 gallon water jugs and fill those in town or somewhere and use that, forget the pond idea if you ask me. Or if you have a 25 gallon tank, just fill that up remotely with clean water.
