rumor

i had a guy at work tell me that he heard that the dnr was going to allow rifles for deer, in the same caliber as are legal for pistols. i know they tried to get this passed a few years ago, but it failed. does anyone know if the legislature is actually going to look into this durring the current session?

also, what are your thoughts on it? would you run out and trade that slug-chucker for a .44 lever action? or maybe a .480? 45-70?

i havent heard anything about that, and dont believe it could ever happen, if it did, i wouldnt trade my muzzleloader for anyone of those guns

I heard that a couple of months ago. Its got to be a rumor there are to many people in this state. Houses everywhere and bullet from a high power can travel miles. They would also have to make illegal to party hunt. Could you imagine 16 guys surrounding a section of trees with high powers. Yikes

I have seen way more than 16 guys surrounding a section with high powers after a coyote....

I have'nt heard a word about that.
That's the last thing that we need is high powers zinging everywhere, bad enough with slugs. Just my own personal opinion.

i agree but that rifles arent the answer although those calibers are bulky and have poor ballistics, the 45-70 flies similar a good rifled slug. all in all you have a bunch of big lead turds flying. also i dont the iowa law, but hunting with a hand gun is vague, could be hunting with a contender chambered in 270. if you guys had a bunch of calibers from that family flying around, you had better trade in that tree stand for a fox hole.

not high powered rifles....pistol caliber only, same as are legal for pistols for deer now. a .357 from a rifle is not going to fly too much further than a .357 from a pistol

the iowa law on pistols is not vague. a .270 is NOT a straight walled casing. any round with a shoulder is NOT a legal round

...my guess is that this is nothing more than a rumor...I am not convinced that the DNR is wanting to introduce modern (hi-power) rifles of any caliber to deer hunting in Iowa...also, the first funnel date has already passed by making it too late for the Legislature to address this issue this year - if they wanted to...

one more time. the rifles in question are not "high powered" rifles. a pistol cartridge shot from a rifle barrel is running at about a 150 yard maximum range, MAYBE 200. we are NOT talking about 400 yard elk or coyote guns. my muzzleloader runs out farther than what these rifles are capeable of.

I'm fairly new to Iowa and had been wondering about the rifle restriction. I'm from PA where you pretty much have your choice.

Granted, for the timber I hunted in last fall, I wouldn't want or need my .30-06 anyway, but I've just been curious I guess.

well i know its rumor, the guy said he heard it was passed, which i know wasn't true. i was trying to stir a little conversation. this has come up in passed years, although i don't think it get too far passed the discussion stage. mostly (i think) because when people hear the word rifle, they all think of 400+ yard big game or varmint rifles. since these rounds are already legal in a pistol form, it makes sense to allow their use in rifles. i for one, would consider putting the shot gun up, and would use a .44 mag pistol and rifle during shotfun season (and of course, carry the muzzleloader from time to time, especially when a long shot might be needed)
