Rut Report

What’s everyone seeing out there? Some nice ones are being posted on Trophy Bucks of Iowa on Instagram.
I’ve only seen small bucks chasing here in NW Iowa. Good luck guys!

Yesterday I saw the first antlered deer from the stand this season, was a slam dunk if I wanted to shoot a dink.

I saw two more dinks from that stand between 1-2 pm today. Saw a decent two year old in another county this morning before moving.

The bucks are just walking around looking. Not seeing them exerting much effort. “Rut mouth” not hanging open as usual when they are all rutted up.

Coming home at dark, had to slow down for a doe crossing the road, glanced the direction she came from and there were more wanting to cross, a HUGE 8 was among the milling deer.

I’ve seen chasing just at dusk heading home lately.

Pulled SD cards today and my target has gone nocturnal, many stands in the area on surrounding ground so no surprise he has figured out the pressure is on.

I saw noticeably more buck movement starting on the 6th and about that time the mature bucks locked down with the first round of does coming into heat.

I think it’s pretty good. But - admittedly…. In areas with good deer #’s & very little EHD. Last couple days around state a big handful of guys got bucks I know.
I’ve seen ruts in iowa for a LONG LONG time now…. Historically, I’d say, anecdotally, 60%++ of guys are disappointed in rut in ANY season of past. “Slow” or whatever.
When it’s not season - people always fantasize about the rut. Because some of them have magical times. Especially if u in right spot at right time. I’d even say 2 guys a mile apart might have totally different sets of feedback on the rut. One might say “on fire” and one might say “it sucks”.
I don’t care how u slice or dice it…, ruts are still hard & require some luck. Throw low deer #’s or ehd into it - really hard.
No Matter the case…. Don’t give up. Enjoy being out there whether it works or not. Good luck guys!!!

7yo daylighted for the first time today that wasn’t within minutes of dark - panting working a scrape at 8:30. Hopefully his last night is tonight!

Drove the south central part of the state through the timbered area the entire way yesterday - easily seen 30-50 bucks on does. 2 super mature ones, otherwise lots and lots of 3-4 and smaller. I’d say they are on does now and searching!

Otherwise up until about the 5th was pretty darn slow for us! Typical though, it truly seems to be a ‘right place, right time’ type of deal. 200 yards off and your completely dry sometimes!

Saw three mature bucks cruising Saturday when the rain let up, two got upwind from me and you could smell they were rutted up. Saw two yesterday afternoon, along with plenty of dink bucks and does. Seeing a few yearlings by themself, but also seeing does with fawns. This would be a good week to be out.

Haven't been able to get out a lot but when I have it's been slow slow slow. Haven't seen a mature buck yet, few dinks, and few does. I've had one good sit where I seen over 10 deer the rest have been painfully miserable.

I just posted this in a "brassicas" thread, but my son has had a spectacular hunt this morning. At one point NINE bucks were sweating a doe right around him for about an hour.

If you were two ridges over, I doubt you saw a deer. We are still light on mature deer after EHD in the area last year. But overall population, while down in our area, is not terrible, just lots of younger deer.

Edit to add: at the max, there were 10 bucks worrying said doe. 3, three year olds and on down from there.
