I had to do a little lunchtime shopping today and decided to drop a few things off at home before returning to work, As I left home I pulled to the end of the street and noticed a deer laying out in the field which is a picked soybean field. I thought I could see a little bit of antler so I went over to check it out.
As I approached the deer I noticed its ears were moving as if it could hear me coming but really couldn't move.
As I got closer he started thrashing around but could not move . I noticed that he had a broken front leg and a broken rear leg on the same side,so I Imagine he was probably hit this morning in the thick fog. I thought about getting back home to grab my bow and finish him off, but then I thought about someone reporting me and the police showing up and making me put my bow tag on him, I wasnt willing to risk that .
I decided instead to call the Polk county sheriffs office and request a salvage tag. When the officer showed up I gave him the run down and he offered me a salvage tag. I then asked if he would shoot the deer and he said he would but it would be in the head and I told him I wished he wouldn't. The rack isn't that big but I wanted to keep it.
At this point I offered to shoot it with my bow and he told me to go get it. I ran to get it and went and finished the deer off. After that he had me sign the salvage tag and off he went. So now I've got a little butchering to do tonite. The way I see it is "BONUS BACKSTRAPS"
