Scent Elimination.... Whats your secret

Hey all,

Thought that some of us might pick up a tip or secret on trying to be scent free if everyone would post their normal routine before going to hunt.

List things like: shower, seperate towels, clothing in bags, sprays, cover scents,

I will post mine when I get a break later today.

i get up at least half an hour early and sit on the throne, hoping to avoid a bad situation later in the stand....(it never seems to work

)

i then take a hot shower with "Scent eliminating" shampoo and body soap. (Dead Down Wind)
i then put on my base layers that regularly get washed in "Scent Eliminating detergent"
jeans and a sweat shirt
hop in the truck for the drive to the land.
once we get to where we hunt, we pull our "Scent Free" clothing bags out, i take my clothes out and spray each item down thouroughly with "Scent Elimination Spray" and my boots.
i then change and do not touch anything in or on the truck, or the truck itself. we then (depending on our mood) put coon urine on our boots by the truck, so it is mostly worn off by the time we get to our stand.

once up in the stand, we may spray down again, and put scent wafers on our clothing. during the rut i like to hang scent wicks around the stand AND up in the stand, or i may hang Buck Rut scent wafers or Doe in Estrous wafers in the tree around where im sitting.

most of all, we play the wind whenever possible! all this extra work is in the case of a deer of any type shows up down wind.
I cant say this is the reason we see lots of deer, but we do see lots of deer, and my confidence is high when we mind our P's and Q's.
i know the scent spray we use works to a certian extent, it may not completely eliminate or mask our human odor, but it helps and the number of deer i see tells me we are doing something right.

The most important thing IMO is to avoid perspiring by taking warm clothes with you to the stand in your backpack and putting on once in your stand. I like to wash my clothes in only baking soda, wear rubber boots to and from the stand, and use Ghost spray to kill bacteria and other odor causing smells on me. I NEVER hunt a stand when the wind is not in my favor.

Nothing special here. I hunt strictly by the wind. I only hunt a spot if the wind is perfect. I check the wind frequently and if it changes, I leave or move to another location.

I wear scentblocker camo and use every scent control thing made. I still wont hunt a stand if the wind is not in my favor. Im not confident enough in the scent control products to completely rely on them.

I always dress and undress in the field and always spray down with an eliminator including boots. Cloths go into and out of tight sealing containers along with my boots, release, pack, etc. I am going to need a bigger container this year. Too much stuff.
I touch as little as possible while walking to and from the stand and will walk a long ways out of my way to get to the stand so that I can come into it down wind. This is if I am not lone wolfing it. I try not to hunt a stand location more than once every several days and love to hunt my favorite stands in the rain or right before so that any scent I leave hanging around will be suppressed by the rain. Shower before hand as others have said and have used scent elimating clothing. Don't know if it works but since I have it I wear it and take care of it as directed.
Despite all of this I have not filled my buck tag that past two years. Plenty of does have bit the dirt and plenty of borderline bucks have been passed. Many of which came in down wind. The more maticulous you are the more likely you will see more deer.

This is what I try to do ideally.

Shower...Use a regular soap, after really scrubbing odor cuasing areas and the rest of the body, I then rewash the body and my hair with a no-scent antibactieral soap. Put on my underlayers, these are usually washed with just no-scent laundry detergent. I drive to hunting area, pull out a rubber tote that I keep all my outer layers in. I use 2 kinds of scent killer sprays. Light spray of Carbon blast for the insides and light spray of HS. Autumn spray for the outsides. I take my release, grunt, binos, bow and everything out of my bow case. I take and spray Carbon Blast into my bow case pad.

And off I go to the stand.

When Im done hunting I spray another light coating of Carbon Blast inside of my tote and clothes.

When I'm in the stand, I fart in a zip-lock baggy. As long as the yellow and blue makes green on the seal you know you're good.

I use unscented Dawn dish soap. Usually shower the night before and stay away from the dog before I go to bed. Then when I'm getting dressed in the morning I spray my stuff down with HS Scents Fresh Earth spray. I also spray down again before I get in the stand.

I have Todd (the Lone Wolf) in the tree w/ me so scent elimination is useless.

He smells worse than heart surgeons zip lock baggy.

Serously......
Seth, you best not do that in a couple weeks......
or someone might get upset....

In all seriousness though, I just do what pretty much everyone else does as far as the washing and dressing in the field and whatnot. Although if you don't have to drive anywhere to hunt like someone I know you can just hang the clothes on the line outside, shower, then go outside in your underwear to get dressed- which I might add is pretty funny to witness when it's 35 degrees in the morning.

When did you start doing all of this?

For a typical morning hunt...I hang all of my clothes in the bushes about 8 feet off the ground the night before.

I shower in the morning with HS non-scent shampoo/bodywash soap. I have underarmour that I use like scentlok baselayers, after undies and socks it's next. I spray down with scent-eliminator after it's on...especially my hands. I'll then put on my pants and a tee-shirt and drive to the hunting spot. I'll pull my outter clothes out of my tote...finish dressing and hit the stand.

I also don't go to a stand with out the right wind...and I usually rub my boots down with a tarsal gland from a previous years buck.

I hunt a lot of cattle pastures so i try to step in as many cowpies as possible while hanging stands before the season...and maybe a few during season.

This year I'm trying out some of the scent-free deorderant...after the arm pits I might apply to my "leg-pits" and hands.

My hands sweat a lot so that's where I try to foucs my "scent-attention" after my outter layer clothing.

Well, I have an interesting situation, I was born without the sence of smell. Yep, I can't smell a thing. Last year was my first year hunting (1st season shotgun) and I didn't see any deer unless I scared them up. My buddy saw plenty, they walked right past him.

Since I can't smell, I got some doe pee and sprayed it all over my hunting cloths. What a 100% turn-around that was. I Saw plenty of deer after that, and shot a doe that same day.

One thing that I have wondered about was if it was legal to put a stronger human sent in other places to help divert the deer your way. Seems like thats what was helping my buddy, the deer were avoiding me and going right to him. I could hear them, but couldnt see them.

If so, could you hang some sweaty socks

I think some of you guys make it too much work sometimes. I shower before I go and keep clothes in the tubs with leaves and dirt. I alway walk witht the wind at my face and only hunt with a perfect wind. I have no money to by spray the last too years so i dont use it. Its been two years since I have been busted by smell. I just use the wind all the time. I dunno. I just dont like to kill myself staying scent free.

I am definetely religious with my clothes airing out and being in tubs though.
