scope question

For a coyote gun, is it better to not have a scope than have an inexpensive one? I am thinking mostly in terms of light gathering for nighttime shots. I see the Nikon ar p-223 scope is on sale for 100$. It's a short body 1/2 moa with windage adjustment and a bdc reticle. Anyone use one? Be better to save for a Burris c4 and shoot open for now? Mostly wooded area and less than 200 yds shots I imagine.

Objective size is key for gathering light. If you are planning to hunt low light, I would go no smaller than a 40 mm objective. As far as clarity on a "cheap" scope vs an expensive one? For 200 yards and in and fairly low power you probably wouldn't be able to tell enough difference to matter. Higher magnification is where the expensive scopes will shine. I personally shoot a cheap konus pro 6-24x44 on my 22-250 and couldn't ask for more. I'm very rarely zooming in higher than about 10 power. We go all the time on 1/2+ moonlight nights with snow on the ground and I've never had an issue. I think the p-223 will do you just fine.

Agree with Lyon. As much as I like good optics, you can get by at medium range in marginal light with a less expensive scope. Also, most coyote guns won't have enough to seriously test a scope. Additionally, I'm pretty sure you will NOT like shooting open sights in marginal light.

...just my preference, but I am not a fan of the multi-reticle in a coyote gun. Those rounds shoot so flat I don't find it necessary for coyotes. 40 mm minimum, but I would go 50 mm. Also, IMO a illuminated reticle is a must in a coyote gun. My 2C

I was wondering that also about having an illuminated reticle. Wouldn't the crosshair disappear in the body otherwise? Sorry if I sound dumb but night hunting I have never done

They have a 3x32 for 99$ with a carbine bdc, a 3x9x42 with a bdc600 for 150$ or I can get a Burris c4 for half price thru a buddy.

What price can you get the 3-9x40 C4 for? If you can get it around the $150 range, that probably wouldn't be a bad deal.
