Below is a communication from Pheasants Forever Chapters, asking them to contact Legislators on Monday to protest the meddling with public lands now going on through the House of Representatives.
I encourage you to ask your chapters and organizations to do the same. Please contact Representatives and Senators on Monday to express your displeasure at Legislative actions aimed at curtailing the acquisition of public areas by the DNR—areas where many of you hunt and fish, and that are the outdoor legacy of Iowa’s children.
HF 2434, State Government Efficiencies:
The rumor mill at the statehouse says that there will be an amendment offered on Monday to drop the idea of selling “farmable lands” or any wildlife areas.
That sounds great but what follows is another amendment to stop all land acquisition. This is absolutely not acceptable. Iowa’s public lands are an investment in the future of Iowa. You all know the facts and figures on Iowa public lands. 1% of Iowa is in public lands, at the pace the DNR is acquiring new public lands today – it will take 80 years of land acquisition to get 2% of Iowa in public wildlife and recreation lands.
The money used to buy public wildlife areas is fish & wildlife trust fund money – our license dollars. Tell the politicians to get their noses out of our money and our business. If you want to see places for your kids and grandkids to hunt, fish, or just be in the outdoors this legislation is critical.
Call you legislators on Monday, March 19th. First call is to House members. 2nd call is to Senators. Go to www.legis.iowa.gov to find your legislator.
House switchboard number is: 515-281-3221. Senate switchboard number is: 515-281-3371
Message to legislators: As a sportsman/woman that buys Iowa hunting and fishing licenses I am disgusted with the political wrangling around our public lands, in particular the public wildlife areas throughout Iowa. NO sale of Iowa public lands, I don’t care if it is farmable land or not. I consider the sale of public land as STEALING from the Fish & Wildlife Trust Fund. Finally, NO moratorium on buying public land. Public land is bought from willing sellers. I consider a moratorium on buying public lands as STEALING from our Fish & Wildlife Trust Fund.
All of this is to be debated on Monday in the House Ways and Means Committee. Do not just focus on the HW&M Committee. Call every house member, let them know we are mad.
Good editorial in the Sunday Des Moines Register, follow-up editorial coming on Monday in the Register. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20120318/OPINION03/303180046/Listen-to-Mother-Nature
Keep up the good work and keep the phones ringing.
