I've got some friends from the South African downhill ski team that would like to tell us how to better manage IOWA'S deer herd. Can they be added to the list also? Looks like it's come one come all at this point so I figured it shouldn't be a problem. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

It would probably be a good idea to bring in a member of PETA as well, you know, that way we get all sides of the issue to make an informative decision!

Here's part of an FOI news letter. A glimps at what they represent. After reading this, I am trying to figure out how many of you have lied to and threatened your legislators? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION

One of the biggest challenges I have every month about this time is
composing the monthly update. In some months there isn't a lot of
information to share and in others it's just the opposite. This month in
particular has been very active for us due in large part because of Iowa's
legislature being in session and monitoring the legislation both pro and
con affecting our initiative.

The amount of correspondence I have received has increased significantly
since the beginning of the year, especially over the last several weeks.
Most of this correspondence is inquiring as to the status of our
initiative and has been generated by the publicity and exposure we've been
gaining as more individuals are becoming aware of our efforts.

We view this as a positive reflection on the efforts that we are making in
Des Moines and the support that we are building there. Until this year
there has never been an organized effort to provide a voice for your
rights as landowners in Iowa. Our initiative has helped to generate
interest from Iowa residents and non-residents alike and members in the
Iowa legislature are becoming better informed of this issue. The success
we have had has not gone unnoticed by groups who have long opposed the
policy change that we are seeking. These groups are beginning to feel
threatened by the momentum we have been able to build in favor of our
initiative and as we expected they have resorted to the methods that they
have found success with in the past. Their choice has been one of
providing misinformation, negative attacks and threats against Iowa
decision makers and legislators who are the same people they have selected
/ elected to their positions to represent their constituency.

Iowa's legislators and state officials are becoming more informed on this
issue. For many the decision to change their previous opinions is due to
the commitment they made to their constituency to serve them and to
represent their better interests. Why are there hundreds of bills
introduced each year to the legislature if it's not to change and update
old policies and laws to meet the needs of the state? The restrictive
Non-resident landowner policy of the past denying "Iowa landowners" equal
privileges no longer serves the state in the capacity as it was intended
decades ago.

The Iowa's Deer Advisory Committee acknowledged the following, "It is
important from a social and economic perspective for non-resident hunters
to not be restricted without sound management reasons." We have long
expressed our opinion that Iowa's Deer Management Policy cannot be
successful by excluding a growing group of landowners that is estimated
near 20%. The state of Iowa has long been considered the leader in
conservation and denying landowners the ability to actively manage their
own properties can have severe implications all across the state affecting
all of Iowa's stakeholders.

We are laying the foundation for change in Iowa but we can't do it by
ourselves. Many of you have asked how you can help provide support. Today
make time to send a message to each of the following and ask them to
support "equal landowner privileges". Go the extra mile and contact at
least 10 or more of your friends and family members to do so as well. Our
opposition has been organizing a long time to oppose this challenge; we
need to make sure that we are being heard as well.

Be respectful with your messages. As Iowa landowners we all embrace Iowa's
heritage, there is room for compromise without compromising the quality of
Iowa's wildlife which we all enjoy.

I would just ask that everyone opposed to FOI and thier agenda does what FOI is asking their supporters to do.

And yet another email has been sent.

Thanks for all the 'heads up' we get on this site.
Its very appreciated even though it doesnt get said enough.

When you send emails to natural resource committee members, please include the following questions or statements.

*Who is representing the Ia shotgun hunter. In 2008, 69% of Iowans only purchased a firearms deer license, that is well over 100,000 deer hunters that do not have a voice at the committee

*What about the muzzleloaders.

*Where is PF, 83% of their leadership also deer hunts

*Why can't NWTF be at the table. Turkey hunters don't deer hunt?

If we are to have minority players on this committee, what a travesty to leave off the majority groups.

This would bring to the table the real stakeholders of this state.

I can't believe that one or two people have the authority to set the course of this committee for their own agenda. Every conservation group in this state should be up in arms with this latest decision. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

You can call me a politician, call me anything you want, but when a NRLO is given more representation than 250,000 Iowa sportsmen it just WRONG.

Has this bill been passed? Does it still need to go through the house before it can be voted on? I see it passed the senate side, I just don't know how this whole political machine works.

If they want to add a group they should add Iowa Whitetail with over 10,000 members we represent a very large number of "shareholders".

I can tell you that the 30 other people at the deer classic that bothered to attend the Saturday IDNR deer study comittee panel discussion with Ironwood, BigTypical and myself certainly didn't impress anyone on the panel that is friend of FOI. Had to fight through throngs of Residents trying to pack the double, (or was it triple) sized meeting room for Lee and Tiffany to get to the panel discussion. Now dont get me wrong, I understand the whole Tiffany thing, but I think way too many residents are walking around gawking at the pigs that residents have harvested in large part due to the current cap on Non-resident hunters, not realizing they may be a few short years from saying I used to hunt there and now the whole section is gone to Outfitters and non-resident trophy hunters. What a sad day it would be at the deer classic when the new Iowa State archery record that is all the buzz is only shown at the illinois, Minnesota or Kansas deer classic because the hunter that harvested it doesn't want to do the drive! That deer study comittee panel discussion room should have been standing room only.
The comittees executive summary said something like an ad-hock comittee should do a pilot study/program to determine how Iowa landowners could share in the economic benefits of deer hunting? Now I dont know about the rest of you, but when I hear ad-hock committee and pilot program, I perk up and pay attention, because someone is pulling the wool and you might be getting hosed and not know it yet.
The summary also said that the current regulations have concentrated non-resident hunters and land-owners to several counties in Iowa. The panel was asked if there was a corresponding problem in these counties in controling the deer population. The panel looked at each other for a little bit, then handed the microphone to the member with the biggest stones and he said, "you hit the nail right on the head, that is a problem in those areas" I want to thank Willie for his honesty as it appeared to be a politically sensitive subject.
The good news is we have the IBA doing a geat job lobbying for us, Iowa resident hunters have answered the call and have the population heading in the right direction and it seems that our Legislators do listen, but I fear much more involvement is needed in the future to keep what we have before our overall apathy has devastating affects on resident opportunities to hunt and harvest the biggest whitetails on earth. I hope to find a way to do more and pray my strong, like minded Iowa Whitetail brothers do the same. Spread the word!

VERY well stated. E-mails sent but I'm not sure how much good it'll do with the current crop and the hierarchy that's clearly been formed.
