Your old buddy Dick Dearden (Senate Natural Resouces Committee Chair and Democrat) would like to see some changes to Iowa Concealed Carry Law as evidenced by SF 258. Proposed changes are underlined.

SF 258

A person shall not be issued a professional or nonprofessional permit to carry weapons unless:
The person is eighteen years of age or older for a professional permit or <u> twenty=one years or older for a nonprofessional permit.</u>

You can carry a firearm defending your Country but not here until you're 21?

The House File (559) and the Senate File (258) are quite different. The Senate version uses the language "shall be by AND AT THE DISCRETION OF the issuing officer" and the House version uses the language "SHALL be issued by the issuing officer". I don't know the wording in the current law, but I don't think there is much difference in the Senate File and the current law in regards to the discretionary issuance by the sheriff.

Senator Deardon has been a good friend to the Iowa sportsman on several issues. If you contact the Senator on the right to carry please be courteous and thank him for his support on the other issues facing Iowa sportsmen.

Like I always say though, please read the bill for yourself and don’t take my word for it, even though I have never ever been wrong about anything, there is always a first time.

Current wording:

<s>Any person who can reasonably justify going armed may be issued a nonprofessional permit to carry weapons. </s>

Dearden's version:

The issuance of a nonprofessional permit to carry weapons shall be by and <u>at the discretion of the issuing officer</u> who shall, before issuing the permit, determine that the requirements of sections 724.8 through 724.10 have been met.

Yeah, the house file is great. It's total shall issue, negates the need for a reason of issuance and places no restrictions on the license as can currently be done. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Still does put the nonprofessional permit age at 21 though which I'm not in favor of but if the rest of that language were changed, it would IMO be a very worthy bill. Very different.

The "At the discretion" part still bugs me, and you had the spelling of the Senator's name correct, Dearden, not Deardon. My bad.

I think this link has been put up before, but they have a pretty good site. I would have joined at the Classic, but I still had to buy gas to get home.

My county has gone from red to green and according to the site the twice monthly classes are full until May with a cap of 50/class.

Me too. That's my main problem with it and IMO the senate version is actually a step backward as it shores up the "may issue" position. The house version on the other hand would make all counties green light irregardless of the sherriff at the helm. That is, unless I'm missing something which has been known to happen a time or twenty.
