Just in case you guys don't know what one looks like.:moon:

I hit submit with only one item selected: I'm disappointed that the late season was closed this year (in an area where I have been going to hunt with a friend).

I should have also selected that I: Won't be hunting the late season this year.

And yes, I know what a shed buck looks like.;)

Why isn't - "Yes, I will be responsibly participating in the late rifle season to help manage the doe numbers on my farm" one of the options? If you don't like it don't do it. Do you really have to bring this up every year? I have killed quite a few does over the last couple of years and I haven't killed a single shed buck. This is because I take my time and look at each deer, just like many other responsible hunters do during late rifle season.

This is a lot like the gun control argument, just because a few idiots shoot up schools then everyone's guns should get taken away. So just because some idiots shoot shed bucks then this season should be shut down, even though it really helps some people manage deer numbers?

Yes, I do have to bring this up every year! :D:way:

"Manage Doe numbers" - I just figured so few folks really were out doing that I didn't put that as an option. & "Shed Buck Season" is a season by itself, you didn't know that?!?!? You must be referring to a different season- "Late Antlerless season"?!?! 2 totally different things! Thankfully, a major meatlocker by me gets almost as much success with the Shed Buck season as the Antlerless season! Why would you shoot a 130 lbs doe when you could shoot a 165 lbs buck!?!?! Lot more meat! Having a little fun too, yes, I'll be out for shed buck season. I've loaded up on extra quantities of super glue this year as well, shooting the shed bucks & we try and match the sheds up later- glue em on, EXTRA BUCKS without a regular buck tag!

Been out there, talk with groups every year & SORRY.... The VAST (Yes, this is my strong belief) MAJORITY of folks out are NOT RESPONSIBLE, CAREFUL & CAUTIOUS "DOE ONLY" HUNTERS!!! Shed bucks & button bucks are frequently the result of the "average late season hunter" out there- no one will ever convince me different because I've seen it over & over & over & over and I know the folks out there (and I wouldn't worry bout most folks who ARE responsible & likely on this site). Even "responsible" hunters find it very difficult to identify shed bucks & button bucks. They may have the right motives but the incidence of mistakes is staggering and not making one is too difficult for most and in most situations - like 75% of guys (IMO) in my area doing their hunting with deer drives or without binocs, etc. Wal-Mart Warriors will be full-force, dusting off the AR's & getting the high capacity clips rolling for those multiple running shots. I'm doing all that myself after I pound down a case of Natural Light & pray my .308 I ordered miraculously comes in on time!!:drink2:

Why do you care skip? You have a ton of your own ground so just manage that like the genius you are and don't worry about it.

Also, for you IW walmart hunters, contact me with your big shed bucks. I'll buy the cape

Skip, if you're area is so bad why don't you sell and buy in a different area? You could also move back to Michigan.....we all know how great their management practices are. LOL :)

Well if you really cant tell a difference between a shed buck and a doe then u prolly shouldnt even be hunting in this season.I jus shoot small bodied deer and ive never shot a shed buck plus i agree with southerniowa.

Jus a bunch of city boys runnin they mouths!!!
-(in words of a wise man Earl Dibbles JR.)

He obviously has an agenda on this one...so be it. I don't hunt the season because I'm not in an area where I can, but if I were, I'd be out there.

I will also note (as I do every year) that the "the bucks have all shed" talk will be soon be replaced by shed hunters comments in March talking about how 75% of the bucks are still packing :D

Wowsers, quite the feedback, that's ok though, if I dish some out- it's all fair I take some back ;)

Breiner- I do manage my ground how I want it and no, it doesn't impact me very much. I'm lucky where my farm is insulated. I care about our state though & other people's hunting. I feel bad for the "everyday guy" who hunts a shared 80 acres and is in a block with 8 other landowners (which is typical iowa). The every day farms are the ones hurt badly by this season. I guess my concern should only be had if it's for selfish reasons I suppose? Love the genius comment too.

SS- my direct area is not hit at all. All my neighbors are on board... The one neighbor that does deer drives does not hunt late shed buck season. The others that do hunt on food, out of blinds, with careful eye. I've hunted in areas far far different in 90% of the cases... Areas in Davis county, Van Buren, Taylor, Monroe, etc - all of which I knew folks & groups that hunted large parties, did drives, shot at running deer and all harvested staggering amounts of shed & button bucks. One of the "biggest meat lockers" many of us know of & many on here bring their deer to (many probably know my reference) - go there late season, look at how many shed bucks (and yes, button bucks) are there every year. Ask the guys there, they "really don't care" and shake their heads saying "this is nuts" every late season. And ya, I'll be out there hunting, hopefully with an AR. My area is not impacted at all BUT it's a rare case & most are.

Solo (and SIA) - I truly believe their are good folks like you out there & I am sure u are good folks. I am sure & believe you that you haven't shot a shed buck. BUT, in my strong opinion, you are in the minority. Large groups doing pushes are huge in #. Guys like us sitting on food with scopes & binos truly wanting to manage are not the mainstream of THIS season. MOST of this season "just wanna shoot, YEE-HA!". which, blasting & killing are "fun" but doesn't belong this late in the yr with this risk level.

NW- Honestly, my main agenda is just to have some fun with this post. Really, I don't care in regards to "myself", I do care about the state and do feel Shed Buck Season is a disaster every year BUT, at this point, a guy's just having a little fun. If the season stays, won't impact me hardly a bit BUT I do feel a lot of guys are hit badly. Like a good friend of mine who had a giant shed buck killed on his property line last year in later Jan, recognized the characteristics of buck - found the sheds later in his plot, with a 20" spread it went 212"- dead from some teenagers who "wanted to shoot" (which I don't blame them). Happens ALL THE TIME around the state and again, impacts the smaller land owners & "regular hunters" who may share permission on smaller tracts with many small landowners intermingled.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Just because people can have firearms and can purchase a tag doesn't mean they are responsible enough to use either one.
lucky for us our ground has all the food and all the deer. we do participate in the late doe season, that is what we shoot is does.
You can't hold the hand of every jack wagon with an itchy trigger finger.
we have been taking does with centerfire rifles during this season ever since they made it legal. I with they would get rid of it all together.
Believe it or not there are still places in this state that don't get trespassed on. shotgun drives. EHD. or shed antler buck shooters. there are still pockets of too many deer and we as managers of these properties will do what we need to do to make sure things are in check. this season helps us do that.

You are right skip, without your helpful post all of us Iowa hunters will suffer. Thanks man, you are the reason we will all be better hunters!

Top notch! :way: Incredibly clever as well!

*& 2 posts now getting personal, ok, whatever.... I do wonder this serious question though..... I've talked with 2 high volume, top quality taxidermists now, 1 trained with Meder as well (you would know this person) - they both won't stop talking about the damage it's done to their business & how many fewer mature bucks they personally are seeing. These are both folks who are very well respected & have had huge waits for deer about 5 years ago. This is affecting their livelihood & they are upset about the damage all the late hunting is doing IN THEIR AREAS. And we all know there's pockets of high populations (my area for sure!!) and lots of areas in the state where it's been decimated. Maybe you are not in one of those types of areas, apparently not. & yes, chill the heck out.

Personally... I can't wait. The scabs on their heads are amazing fried in butter and onions. Ranks right up there with the cheeks on a fish

I am only going if I can hunt Skips farm. None of ours have shed yet and it just isn't exciting until you get a good number of shed bucks to hunt.
