I remember one of the seminars at the deer classic a couple years back about shed dogs. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the guy trains them from newborn until like 6 months before turning them over to the new owners. By then they have learned the fundamentals and are ready to go. I think they also train drug dogs and such as well. I can't for the life of me remember what his name was. But he made these dogs out to be the best of the best for people that are very serious about shed hunting dogs. Maybe someone on here remembers what his name is or any other info about him?
I have a choc lab that i sent off to be trained for watefowl hunting...since moving here Id love to have a shed dog...do you guys think it would be tough to get him to be a shed dog...in the two years he hunted watefowl up in nodak id say he retreived somewhere around 1500+ birds so he knows how to hunt..just think it would be neat to have him out with my wife and i this spring
Jeremy Moore, the Dog Bone Hunter! That dude is a shed wiz! Just talking with him for 20 minutes briefly helped me tremendously transition my lab pup at the time into a shed fool! He definitely knows his stuff! Here's the website: http://dogbonehunter.com/antler/
1500 retrieves, that's impressive! I think if i lived in the Dakotas I'd give up deer hunting, nothing more enjoyable than watching a good lab work a downed duck on water.
But from my experience: I jumped my pup into sheds from Day 1. She slept, ate, and played with a shed 24-7. I found that it needs to be a game and they obviously have to have the drive to please you, sounds like you already have that covered. It honestly didn't take much to get her into a training mode either, she had the drive to work a bird and I just treated the shed in the same manor. I'd say, depending on how much time you have, you should be able to get him into working order. I won't lie however, hearing the clinking of antler on teeth then seeing your hard work pay off in the form of a running pooch to your feet with an antler almost makes ya never wanna pick another shed up without em there!
It doesn't say anything about raising a dog, training then selling it to you??
