Shooting off shelf?

I'm going to post this here (rather than on the tech forum) b/c I think I'll see more opinions -- this forum is quite popular this time of year.

If the mods want to move it that's fine. I have a traditional archer buddy who's interested in knowing if any of you shoot your compound instinctively off the shelf. He's tried shooting with a tm hunter type rest and a flipper rest in the past but just didn't like having the arrow so far above his hand. Because of that he went back to a long bow. He misses the speed of a compound though. My Q2 has a pretty wide shelf on it. What about other bows? Is there a product out there that you can "build up" or widen a compound's shelf with? And is it possible to shoot consistently with a bow set up that way?

I would think that shooting off the shelf of a modern compound wouldn't lend itself to tuning or shootability. They are designed with specific geometry and moving the travel path of the arrow lower would be out of compound's design.

The guys I know that shoot barebow use the flipper rest as you mentioned. I personally think it's just a matter of practice. Say, like throwing a football or making a basket.

I shoot trad gear and can understand why he would want the arrow close to his hand, but doubt he'll get it there with a compound and have good results.

One thing though.

I remember seeing some custom made compound bows at the Illinois Deer Classic a number of years ago. They had very nicely custom crafted wooden risers. It seems to me that....that guy made a model designed to shoot off the shelf. These bows looked like a hybrid between a modern compound and a custom made recurve. Kinda neet. I watched one being shot and it seemed to shoot very fast and accurate. I remember he used a cam that looked similar to a High Country design.

Might be a long shot, but...

RBB, or anyone else for that matter, if you could think of a name for that bow it would be helpful. thanks!

KSQ2,

I tracked down this guys name. I was told he's the man.

Tim Sizemore, 970-245-9666

Let me know how it works out.
