short spurs

I went out Sat. morning just after the rain and boy were the birds fired up. I ended up shooting the one I deemed to be the biggest and most mature. He wieghed 28 lbs but a fairly short beard at only 8 1/2 in., though it is really thick and course. His spurs are what puzzle me as to his age. They are barely 3/4 inch but very rounded instead of sharp. I don't really shoot all that many turks.....does this mean he is old and has wore down his spurs or is he just a big young one???

Sounds like a big young one, young toms have shorter more rounded spurs, the spurs get longer and sharper with age. You know you have killed a big old dominant one when every time in sight comes down to thrash him after you shoot him. Pay backs I guess. Sound like your turkey is well fed and congrads on a fine bird. 28lbs they dont make them much bigger than that.
