my nephew asked me for advise on hunting with a 870 express he bought some sabot slugs to hunt this year. I dont know what to tell him I have never hunted with a shotgun for deer I use a 30.06. I have been told they drop about 4-6" on a 100 yard shot any help would be great. I know he need to sight it in but I just was currious as to what to expect.

Thanks

The sabot is a great slug and extends the range up to an additional 25 yards. However, in order for them to give the added accuracy that comes with the additional price they must be used with a fully rifled slug barrel. If he has a smooth bore barrel then he is really wasting his money. They won't be any less accurate than a standard slug but at $7-8/box compared with $3/box he won's see the benefit.

alaskan great saying about the lot # thing I can tell you that it DOES make a diff I sighted a 11/87 in with copper solids a few yrs ago shot great the next yr bought new slugs and was way off tried diff boxes with the same effect got out one of the old boxes and was right back on again so lot #'s do make a diff.

I HAVE FOUND THAT MY 870 SHOOTS BEST WITH THE CHEAP FEDRAL SLUGS, i HAVE A QUESTION OF MY OWN, CAN YOU HUNT FROM A BLIND DURING SHOTGUN?

Go with what works for you. For my 870, I can more accurately throw Federal slugs by hand! I try to find Winchesters first (Thiesens had them on sale last Friday when I was there), Remingtons second, then MAYBE Federals. I knew one shotgunner who would go to great lengths to find Activ slugs (all plastic shell, no brass). This is only my opinion and experience. I feel that the most important edge a hunter can have is confidence in their particular set up.

Alaskan, What are you talking about when you say "same lot #"? I've never heard of such a thing.

Deernut, its kinda like the same batch of toll house cookies your better side makes. A lot number is all the same ammunition made in one bunch as if its a different lot , there not exactly the same

More choclate chips versus more gun powder. Does this help...

If shooting a fully riffled barrel check out the winchester platinum 385grain sabot slugs. They are in a black box and rucn about $10 a box.

I shoot a 11-87 with a riffled choke. I shoot brennekee rotwile rifled slugs. THey are the best most accurate slug i have ever shot. You just have to try a lot of different types.

Bushman, you shoot rifled slugs with a rifled choke? I always thought you were supposed to use sabots. I shoot a Browning BPS and I have a rifled choke for it but I stopped using it because the sabots are so damn much money. If it'll improve the accuracy to use the choke I'm all for that!

Like I said, i shoot an 11-87 with those Brennekke riffled slugs, with the riffled choke. I started shooting it with those before i knew any better. I tried out every rifled slug on the market and these thigs are the best. I touch them, can almost put them in the same whole at 50 yards. I tried shootin some sabots this year, (the winchesters i was talking about) and besides the beating that they gave to my shoulder the d@mn things really didn't group that well. They have higher energy and shoot great out of the 870's with fully rifled barrels but the best accuracy i have found is with the brennekke's. I've been told not to shoot the rifled slugs with the rifled choke, but why change what works great. I hit a nice 8 point this year at 60 yards on a dead run quartering away. my uncle shot 4 times and missed and the brenneke dropped it with one shot. the key is to try out different shells and shoot a lot.

I was shooting my .300 win mag prior to my elk trip this year and i couldn't get it to group. I was shooting with my dad at the range. He is shooting the same exact shells that i was and had really tight groups. He shoots an a-bolt composit stalker and I shoot a a-bolt white gold medallion. You'd think that the shells would sshoot the same out of each gun. I switched to the new remignton core-lokt and was touching them at 100 yards. he tried them and couldn't even get them to pattern. My point is try a lot of different ammo!!!!! every firearm shoots very different.

I use the brennekee as well and I will agree they shoot the best that I've ever used. I just put a scope on my shotgun so I will have to try out your way. If I can pay $2 a box verses $10 I'll take that every time.
