Shot Placement Help?????

My brother just called me from his tree. He pulled his shot on a buck and instead of a heart/lung shot, hit just ahead of the shoulder and in the brisket area. The shot was a complete passthrough with a rage 2 blade. He was about 15 feet up and the shot was 15 yards. Said he pulled his head. (We have all been there). I looked at diagrams of deer. Could this have hit an artery or windpipe? Said the deer ran 20 yards and stood for a bit, then trotted off. He said he thinks he can see his arrow on the ground. He is staying on stand until 1.

I hit one in the neck like that once and it went 15 yards and painted everything in the area red. This doesn't sound the same. I'm crossing my fingers for him. Said it's a monster.

There are maany vital organs anterior to the heart but he will know if he hit one of the soon. The good news is it will either be a short track job or he it in the only "void" a deer has, which is infront of the shoulders where the spine dips down. Nothing vital there and the deer should be fine barring infection. IF he did clip the aorta or other vessels coming off the top of the heart, or windpipe etc, that deer will be down soon and the area painted red. Good luck!

He said it was in the lower 1/3 of the neck in the brisket area. To me, that is below the spinal column and in the area of the windpipe and arteries. He just called and said he's going to sneak down and look at the arrow and the spot the deer stood after the shot 20 yards away. I'm sure he will know very soon.

Grazed. He said no blood, just hair. Nothing on the arrow. Ouch. Back to the drawing board.

better than hitting it and having the infection set in. could get him another day with just a free haircut. haha. we have all been there and if you haven't......your day is coming.

Thats what I told him. He is just sick about it, but is glad he didn't open him up. The deer was upwind and never smelled or saw him. Slim chance, but he could see that buck again.
