side note on acorn plantings

I was wondering. How far or deep do you plant the acorns, and how far apart should they be placed. Can you plant them out in the fields, or do you have to plant them in pots and allow to grow first. Might sound stupid, but I don't know and would like to get more white oak on my property.

white oaks germinate soon after falling, you plant them an inch deep wherever. I have never tried them over-wintering in pots, but will this year. I have always planted them out in the permanent location soon after dropping before they germinate. I am also going to store some in the fridge overwinter in damp peat moss and see what the success is there.

All 3 options claim to work, but I know #1 does....that is when squirrels naturally plant them. Red oaks can be done the same way, but they will not germinate till spring.
