When hunting at my cabin, I always have a smudge fire going in the burn barrel.
Start it about October 20th and keep it going for 3/4 weeks.
The wood that I like the best to burn is boxelder, cottonwood, and elm. The punkier, the better for smoke.
Also collect bags of leaves from boulevards and keep quite a few stored.
One thing also I've been doing for several years is storing ALL my hunting clothes in a big shed. Socks, gloves, hats, boots, packs, rattling antler, everything.
I hang them all up and build a super smudge fire in the shed and close the door and let them smoke for hours. Have not spent one dime on scent lekker spray for years.
I have about 12 stands set up, most are within 150 yards of my cabin in all directions and where I decide to sit for a hunt is very often determined where the smoke is blowing. I Love sitting downwind of the smudge barrel.!!
Heck, there have even been a few times I've stood in the smoke butt naked after showering. Lol.
I'm 100% convinced that smoke is the ultimate natural deodorizer.
Most of my stands are 10/ 14' high. Since doing this, I basically have never been busted even though I've had 100s of deer within 20 yards (many) right down wind.
Heck, I think the deer actually like the smoke.
Few days ago, I made a post about deer tearing open a big black bag of yard leaves and we're eating them.
Just for kicks n giggles, today I built a smudge fire as the wind direction would be taking the smoke right over the leaf pile which is about 6_7' from the barrel.
Bout an hour ago, a doe came marching right in and started eating while the smoke was literally blowing right in her face and just a few minutes ago, a button buck fawn did the same.
Just something for you fellas to think about and try.
