I was reading an article today from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department about a Vermont man that was arrested and charged with importing deer from a known CWD endemic area. In this case the endemic area was New York.
The last paragraph of the article speaks to a Vermont requirement for special processing of deer and elk carcasses imported from states that have, or have had, CWD. Iowa is listed as one of the 20 states.
I’ve always been proud to say that I’m from Iowa and I’ve held Iowa above all other states. To see it actually in print that Iowa has CWD was, well, devastating. It is one thing to talk about it and read articles in Iowa publications about CWD in Iowa, but it is another thing entirely to read about Iowa and CWD in another state's publications.
It just hit me kinda hard that we are no better when it comes to CWD than 19 other states. All because of captive deer breeding and high fence hunting. It is of little solace that Iowa isn't yet listed as an "endemic" state.
