Something that really bugs me

I think the extra doe season is a good idea but at the wrong time. Unfortunatly there are a good percentage of shed bucks that get shot. IMO, if the season was moved to before first season shotgun that would solve that problem. Plus the mature deer would be a bit more wise when the shotgun season rolls around which should increase thier chances of survival for another year of growth.

What am I missing??

Perry, I think Mole had the same point in another post. I couldn't agree more.

Unfortunately it looks as though the season is here to stay.

Our best defense to avoid shooting dropped bucks is to educate hunters.

I have to agree also. My cousin missed a 190" plus B&C buck on Thanksgiving day with his bow. "TWICE"!!! Later a neighbor shot "The biggest darned doe he's ever seen" during the late muzzle season. Ends up the "Big doe" had giant pedicles where she/he had just shed. Kind of gives us a sick feeling in our gut still today. Most people would know better and be able to tell the difference between a big doe and a shed buck but there's a few who don't take time to analize before they shoot. It would make things easier if the season dates were changed.

I have to agree with OneCam 100% There is no excuse if you know what to look for and most people don't have an idea other than it has no antlers.

I agree but what about youth season. I know some kids my age that have shot deer that still have some valvet on. Why? I don't know but good idea.

Education is a good thing. Problem being,80% of the guys that are popping anything without antlers do not give a dam. And would have to be tied up and drug to where ever the education was taking place. May save some, but don't expect to sell tickets!!

I think they should change the doe season to early too. Less deer in the herd will stress the remaining deer less in winter resulting in a healthier herd. All the while eliminating the possiblilty of shed bucks being mistaken for does. If the goal is to shoot does then a shed buck is a waste even in a management sense.

This is the dumbest thing Iowa has ever done in the name of "good management". What a disaster. Early season would be better, or make the late season bow only.
