just got off the river and thought i'd share something I think is pretty neat. the picture below is me holding a Blue Sucker (Cyleptus elongus) on the Cedar River near Vinton. Blue Suckers are migratory fish and are rarely seen above the Keokuk Dam because of the 21 foot head differential between the 2 pools. we were shocking for flatheads and a bunch of these guys came up. blue suckers are threatened species in Iowa. chances of seeing one in real life are slim to none. anyway, just thought i'd share that little tidbit even though it's not related to whitetails.

pretty disappointing, the biggest flathead was around 5 pounds and we shocked for about 5 hours or so. the exciting thing was all the young fish. the water was pretty low and there were very few deep holes with good current, a must for big flatheads

muddy,
arent those suckers cool...i was fortunate to shock one up on my intership two summers ago near wabasha, minnesota on the ole miss...i thought the mouth structure was really neat...first one i had ever seen...you never know whats gonna roll up when your shocking a river

Muddy, how many different types of suckers are there native to Iowa?

We used to catch red horse suckers on the Upper Iowa and can them every Spring. Canned sucker on a Ritz cracker and a cold one to wash it down. Hard to beat.

Hey Muddy, where you get the shocking license? Every time I ask the game warden for one he says all I can get is a ticket.

Auggie told me that old blind duck impaled himself on your arrow after you guys chased him around for a half hour.

Ghost, the sucker family consists of:

Blue Sucker (very rare)
Bigmouth Buffalo
Smallmouth Buffalo
Black Buffalo (rare)
Quillback Carpsucker
River Carpsucker
Highfin Carpsucker
Black Redhorse (needs very good water quality to survive)
Golden Redhorse
Silver Redhorse (fairly rare)
Shorthead Redhorse
River Redhorse (very rare)
Greater Redhorse (very rare)
Spotted Sucker
Northern Hog Sucker
White Sucker

17 or so. there's your biology lesson for the day!! most of the rare ones require certain habitats that just aren't around anymore.

jerad - i'm surprised you got one that far on the mississippi to be honest with you.

split brow...don't ask the game warden!!
