South Dakota Pheasant Trip

180class

Well-Known Member
My dad has pheasant hunted ever since I can remember. He put a gun in my hand at the age of 13 and let me tag along with him on his hunts. I have him to thank for getting me involved so much in the outdoors. Since the pheasant hunting in Iowa is garbage anymore, I would like to surprise him with a trip out to South Dakota next year. For those of you who have gone out that way, where would you suggest? Also, how much does a South Dakota pheasant trip cost? What would I need to buy as far as my license?

SD Pheasants

Two great areas are Winner/Gregory and up by Aberdeen/Ipswich...

License is a bit over $100. You can look up on the web for a lodge or do some day hunts on private. Public is not bad either.

Chamberlain is another great area. Good luck

You could probably limit out on our farm here in IA next yr. If you go to SD, take Haas with you please.

You need a NR small game license, good for 2 five day periods, $110 the last time I went. East of the Missouri River is better hunting from my understanding. SD has a very successful walk-in hunter program where the state pays landowners to allow public access. They publish an atlas every year with good maps showing these areas, available free from the GFP mid summer.

Crietveld, so the $110 NR small game license will cover everything I need? Is there a habitat stamp or anything like what we have here in Iowa?

I think $110 covers everything. High bird numbers near Chamberlain most years, I have not heard this year. Somewhat easier to gain access up by Ipswich and Aberdeen.

180Class, if you are serious about bird hunting out here PM me... I have worked at several places and married into a preserve.

Our numbers were down this year, but still excellent and best in the country.

A NR small game license is $110 for (2) five day periods. If you hunt at a "preserve" - they have special licenses that you can buy... $35/day or $65/five days.

PM or email me for details on the places I have been to and would suggest... in the meantime here are links to a couple of pages on our GFP site that have good info.
