Anyone here got a dvd camcorder? Looking for something to take into the tree with me as well as on fishing trips, hanging with the little guys, family time stuff. Not looking for some professional camera here just something I can tape on and chuck into the tube to watch later.

Anyone got one, any recomendations on a specific one?

For small cameras, Sony's are pretty tough to beat. I bought a little handi-cam for a second view for like $230.00 last year. The thing takes darned good footage for that price, and better than the top end consumer brand cameras from even 5 years ago. Less expensive cameras generally lack low-light capabilities, and don't have a manual focus, which is a big no-no when filming hunts. If I were you, I'd check into Mini DV cameras versus DVD. Mini DV is pretty much the standard in the filming industry. You can still review the footage, and if you ever decide to use it for anything else, it's the standard in the hunting industry.

Kaare,

Here are some similar models to the one we got a couple of years ago.
Sony MiniDVD

A lot more styles of these cameras than when we bought ours. (And a lot cheaper now, too

Stupid ? from a non techno geek. How do you view mini dv??? I'm not interested in editing and stuff, hell I'm on dial up so it's not even an option. Just want something to view with family and friends, is it possible with these?

You can watch the footage straight from you're camera (into you're TV). You can also Firewire the footage into you're computer and review / watch it that way.

I have my editor burn DVD's of footage for guys all the time (as we don't recommend reviewing the original tapes often, this is a great way to loose stuff), we could hook you up Sask!

[/ QUOTE ] My Canon mini DV allows me to do minimal editing on the tv screen before burning it onto a DVD. You can add titles, fades and some basic stuff without even hooking it up to a puter. Most of the affordable DVD camcorders are limited to 30 min record time before changing dvd's, thats why I went with the miniDV wich is just a high quality tape "6 times more clear that VHS" and they work great. Gotta have one with the little guys Kaare. You'll love the compact size compared to the old 8mm ones too.
