Drivin to school this morning I seen a tall tightrack 8 pt. chasin a doe through a cut bean field. Funny part was my buddy was bowhunting the timber 300 yrds south of where the buck was chasin. Im in cedar county IA about 30 miles west of Iowa City
im hunting in southeast iowa (monroe county). At 8am this morning had 9 does all together like always just feeding along and there was a broken 4 point, an 8 an a 10 just following behind the group of does. I would say the are in pre rut still. Nothing really on fire where im at.
In the Ames area seeing mixed results. Wednesday morning watched a 140 class 8 pointer chasing a doe hard for a few minutes near my house, that evening in my stand 5 miles away watched a smaller 8 acting calm as could be and then last night had does still paired up with their fawns. Seems to be right on the cusp--all you need is one hot doe.
Sounds like our typical rut when it happens it will let loose. Stay in the timber any day now it will happen usually around the 7th from my experience. Good luck everyone.
